A couple of weeks before the first-season finale, HBO has ordered a second season of Damon Lindelof‘s supernatural drama The Leftovers. Created by Lindelof and novelist Tom Perrotta based on Perrotta’s novel, The Leftovers is probably the most spiritual and weird little series HBO has put on since David Milch’s John From Cincinnati in 2007. It follows the impact of a rapture-like global event on a small suburban community. Its 10-episode first season, which opened with an OK 1.8 million viewers, wraps on September 7. “It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to Damon Lindelof and Ton Perrotta’s provocative and original storytelling,” said HBO’s Head of Programming Michael Lombardo. The series, starring Justin Theroux and Amy Brenneman, is produced by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros Television. In his follow-up to Lost, Lindelof serves as showrunner and executive produces with Perrotta, Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey; with Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger as co-executive producers.
