Remember, as far as the government’s concerned, you are the shipper and you’re ultimately responsible for what happens with your waste. So make sure you choose a waste carrier who’s got your back.
Transporting waste comes with its share of regulatory paperwork; one such document is the manifest bill of lading. Such documentation is a dual responsibility of the shipper (that’s you) and the transporter. Accurately completed forms contain detailed information about your company (the shipper) including:
- Emergency contact name, phone numbers, and address
- Proper DOT shipping name describing your material
- Treatment/disposal facility information, including your waste profile number and contact information for the facility
Although a transporter might complete the above information for you, you are responsible for it the accuracy and content of the document. Your signature indicates your complete agreement with all document information.
Additionally, did you know that you, as the shipper, are responsible for all container labels and truck placards? A quality transporter will take care of this for you, but you need to verify the job is done and done right. Remember, all forms and labels must clearly identify all shipped waste materials. All of these steps help ensure proper handling of your material as a part of routine, daily operations and especially in emergencies.
Some transporters will accept “title to material,” which means they’ll take on the liability of transporting your waste. Not all transporters do this since it means the over-the-road liability in case of an accident or incident shifts from you to them, which costs them. Responsible carriers have special insurance to cover this liability. It’s in your best interests to select a waste transporter that’s covered all the bases.
