HALIFAX – A judge has adjourned the trial of a man accused in the fatal beating of a gay rights activist in Halifax so the accused can find a new lawyer.
Andre Noel Denny of Membertou, N.S., is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of 49-year-old Raymond Taavel.
Judge Peter Rosinski of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court held an in-camera hearing on Tuesday to determine if Denny should be permitted to end his relationship with defence lawyer Don Murray.
Rosinski said he was reluctant to second-guess Denny’s assertion that Murray was not representing his best interests.
Taavel died outside the Menz bar on Gottingen Street in Halifax during an altercation in April 2012.
Denny’s trial was scheduled to begin Tuesday.
