Nevada state Assemblywoman Michele Fiore (R) has lost the support of the biggest police union in the state, KLAS-TV reported.
"What are you thinking to even suggest in any way, shape or form, to even imply that it would be a valid course of conduct for a citizen to point a weapon at a law enforcement officer?" Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers (NAPSO) executive director Rick McCann said in a letter to the lawmaker, who is currently running for a congressional seat. Early voting in the state GOP primary for that seat begins on Saturday.
Fiore, who attracted national attention for supporting anti-government rancher Cliven Bundy and his son Ammon -- as well as her attempt to sell a "cure" for cancer, which she claims is a fungus -- said in an interview last month that she would draw her firearm against an officer if the officer pointed their gun first.
"Once you point your firearm at me, I'm sorry, then it becomes self-defense," she said. "Whether you're a stranger, a bad guy, or an officer, and you point your gun at me and you’re gonna shoot me and I have to decide whether it's my life or your life, I choose my life."
Fiore responded to NAPSO's remarks by saying she was referring to Bureau of Land Management agents, then brushed off the lack of support from McCann's group, which represents 21 law enforcement agencies around the state.
"If their leaders want to take a personal jab at me politically, bring it, and bring it all day long," she said, adding, "They can take the paper they printed it on, and he can use it in his restroom."
McCann later told KLAS that his organization had "had enough" of Fiore's behavior.
"These comments were utterly irresponsible, an embarrassment to your District and our State, and they continue to demonstrate why you are unqualified to hold the position of United States Congresswoman," his letter read.
