12 Natural Ways of Preventing Anxiety Attacks

by Dr. Paul Haider

In this day and age, people have a lot of anxiety. They feel anxious all the time, with the feeling that they are not in control; thus, life spirals downward into depression.

But we can heal everything….

1. Turn It Off – Turn off the smartphone, and walk away from it every day for at least two to three hours. Having to deal with texts, calls, and emails constantly create craziness in the mind and soon anxiety sets in.

2. Filter It – Don’t allow your life to be filled with negative things that cause anxiety. If you are going to the movies, pick something relaxing, joyful, and uplifting that creates inner peace and makes you happy, instead of picking a movie filled with violence and anger. Hundreds of studies show that what we watch creates inner peace or anxiety.

3. Let it Go – When someone says something about you, instead of getting all upset say to yourself, “I have no control over that,” and let it go. Normally, we get all upset and try to change the person’s mind, and in the middle of it, all become full of anxiety.

4. Remember – There is an old saying: “That’s none of my business.” What people say or do, in the long run, has nothing to do with our life. People will talk…and keep talking; all we have to do is follow our heart and not allow any of it to take away our peace. This takes practice, but over time it can be done.

5. Don’t Rent Space – Imagine having a huge, apartment complex with people who never paid their rent, who were causing destruction, like breaking down walls, doing drugs, and more. Sooner or later, you would get rid of them. The same goes for our mind. Do not rent space to people that are not peaceful. Think of your mind as a block of apartments, and only rent space to people who bring peace, love, and joy. Let the rest go; don’t allow all the anxiety of the world to take over and trash your mind complex.

Also, if you have friends that constantly cause you problems and anxiety, you might have to choose new and different friends, and thus set your life free.

6. Walk Away – Walk away from the TV and computer. It has been shown over and over again that both of these cause anxiety. Limit your computer and TV time. Most people watch at least three-to-four hours of TV every night, and that creates anxiety and poor quality sleep…which creates more anxiety.

7. Take a Walk – In Europe, many people go for long walks and enjoy nature. They go out to the river and ocean, taking in the sun, and use leisure time to enjoy the trees, the water, and great conversation.

Nature is a natural antidote for anxiety. It is like taking an anti-anxiety pill, without the pill…and it works every time. Sometimes I go to the rainforest and don’t do a single thing. I park my car, open the windows, and just sit there in the peace, enjoying it all–the birds, the silence, the inner peace.

8. Play Day – Take the time every week to have a play day–be it with your spouse, friends, or just by yourself. Go out and do something fun; listen to the little boy or girl inside and ask them what they would like to do. Take time to get back in touch with your inner child. He or she creates all your joy. All we have to do is listen and follow their lead.

9. Create Community – Studies show that when we have a loving community of people around us we have less anxiety. So get out, join a club, start a gardening group, a photography group, join a social group, or a church group, whatever you can find or can think of doing or starting. Bring loving people into your life, and life will be different.

10. Be Creative – Jump into art–be it painting, gardening, poetry, photography, singing, creating music, being in a band, dancing–any kind of art that you can think of. Art liberates man’s inner imagination and allows the lid on the pressure cooker to be released, setting our spirit free. Everyone has creative ability. We just have to explore and find out what it is, and nurture our ability so it grows into a great passion. This passion fuels great joy!

11. Become Mindful – Most of the time we are running so fast that we get lost, and that causes anxiety. Being mindful, being present in the moment, allows us to pull ourselves back from the brink of anxiety; thus, finding inner peace again. And studies show that mindfulness helps those who have already had their first heart attack by preventing a second heart attack.

Mindfulness prevents anxiety from building up, thus mindfulness is another anti-anxiety pill without the pill…it works every time. There are many courses that anyone can take on how to be mindful and present; just google “Mindfulness Programs” and they will come up.

12. Most of All Meditate – Meditation has hundreds of scientific articles that show that anxiety, stress, depression are nullified with consistent meditation. Even our men and women coming back from war with “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” have found that meditation is the only thing that helps. No medication and no amount of counseling has worked as well as meditation. Now, even the armed forces are teaching their people meditation.

Just putting in 20 to 30 minutes first thing in the morning, and again around 5 or 6 PM works great for anxiety. Consistency is the key, putting in the time is important.

Meditation is like taking an anti-anxiety pill without the pill…it works every time.

Go to www.tm.org or http://www.dhamma.org/en/about/vipassana both of which are wonderful meditation programs. The Vipassana ten-day meditation retreats are free including food and lodging. At some time during the retreat, people report having huge breakthroughs.

  • Anxiety has been a big problem for me the past five years, recently it has gone down by 90%. Some helpful techniques for me is breathing. In through the nose slowly, deeply, exhale out through the mouth slowly, do this until you feel calmed. Also getting into your left brain. Am I in a life threatening situation? If no, then reason with yourself. Anxiety whether general or panic attacks comes from your fright or flight system that humans needed it because of predators. If you’re not being confronted by an angry bear, then you need to rationalize with yourself that you’re not going to die.

  • Why do none of these self help articles ever include what you eat. It’s been proven that what you eat affects how you feel. People have allergies to foods and must correct this. Sometimes lack of a certain chemical is what creates anxiety, and this can be rectified through eating the right foods.
