Fighters from Team YawYan ArDigma swept their matches yesterday in the Mixed Martial Arts category of the first Bakbakan sa Sugbo tournament at the newly-opened Cebu City Sports Institute in Barangay San Nicolas, this City.

Jedael “Buhawi ” Alvarez and Nicko “Ulupong” Suerte logged first round wins over Jayde Dantes and Sabino Camelotes of Arcom Jukai Kick Boxing Club, respectively.

Alvarez was knocked down after being hit with a spinning back fist from Dantes but he was able to score a take down then unleashed a flurry of punches to the latter’s race prompting Referee Lemuel Maglinte to stop the carnage at 2:15 of the first round.

Suerte meanwhile, scored an easy win vs. Camelotes with a rear naked choke at the 1:08 mark of the opening round.

In the main event, Mandaue Unified MMA’s Rodel Valisado exacted revenge on Junrey Soquite who beat him last Aug. 16, by executing a deadly rear naked choke with three seconds left in the second round.

In the undercard, Dodong Jagape won over Romulo Doble Jr. via first round TKO while Dexter Barecuatro choked Bruan Otida also in the first round. John Edu Torbiso scored a TKO win vs. Tommy Turno.

Master Ekin Caniga Jr. and Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) chairman Edward Hayco teamed up for this activity which aims to introduce Cebuanos to MMA. Caniga Jr. and his team also conducts free MMA clinic every Saturday morning at the Cebu City Sports Institute. Hayco will also hold a monthly MMA tournament at the new facility.

“I was overwhelmed by the huge crowd mostly composed of children and teenagers who visited and took part in the opening of Cebu City Sports Institute’s new full-contact sports facilities,” Hayco told CDN.

Also yesterday, lone female MMA fighter of YawYan ArDigma, Angel “Lawin” Sanchez and 11-year Ken Caniga demonstrated various grappling and striking techniques.

Hayco said children and teenagers who want to learn various contact sports at the CCSI like MMA, boxing, karatedo and arnis, could either pursue their dream to become a full pledged fighter or just to stay fit and learn self defense.
