An organ is delivered to an operating room where surgeons are to perform a lifechanging procedure on a recipient selected by matching blood type, the amount of time the patient has waited for the organ and the severity of illness, among other factors. More than 123,000 people are waiting for organ transplants across the United States. According to the nonprofit, OneLegacy, the federally designated organ procurement organization for Southern California, an average of 18 patients die every day waiting for organ transplants.
