About this ebook

Welcome to Appleseed Creek, the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country, where life is not as serene as it seems.

While her Cleveland friends relocated to Southern California and Italy, 24-year-old computer whiz Chloe Humphrey moves with some uncertainty to Appleseed Creek to direct technology services at a nearby college. Her first acquaintance is Becky, an ex-Amish teenager looking for a new home.

While driving Chloe’s car, Becky collides with a buggy, killing an Amish elder. But what looks like an accident is soon labeled murder when police discover the car’s cut brake line.

Now, Chloe must take on the role of amateur sleuth to discover who the real intended victim was before the murderer makes a second attempt. Becky’s handsome Amish-turned-Mennonite brother, Timothy, a local carpenter, comes in handy along the way. With God’s help, they’ll solve the mystery that’s rocking this small community.

What a mystery! Great start to a promising series. I love the mainstream setting among the Amish community. The MC is not Amish, but many of the supporting characters are.

A Plain Death was on the shortlist of books nominated for the mystery/thriller category of the Inspy Awards. It was my very great honor and pleasure to serve as a judge in this category. The decision was hard — all the books nominated were excellent! Here are some of my thoughts on this novel.Chloe is off to her first real job as the tech director of a small college in the heart of Ohio Amish country. Before she even reaches the rural community of Appleseed Creek she rescues young Amish woman, Becky Troyer, from two local thugs. Her determination to enter the Amish community is met with a mixture of welcome and hostility. Undaunted, Chloe sets to solve the mystery surrounding damage to Amish property and the death of a beloved Bishop, while becoming more and more involved with Timothy, Becky’s brother.A Plain Death combines several genres — Amish, cozy mystery, and Christian fiction — to create a very satisfying read. Great characters, picture perfect setting, and a mystery that keeps you interested, this novel has it all. A quick read, A Plain Death is a welcome addition to your vacation reading. I liked that the author distinguishes between the various Amish sects. There really is no stereotypical Amish community. They all have their differences in spiritual and cultural rules and restrictions. The characters are seeking to know God in the light of and despite their past experiences and upbringing. God’s grace is a strong theme in Flower’s novel. If you like a small town setting, an interesting mystery and some fun, quirky and endearing characters, then pick up A Plain Death. This novel is book 1 in An Appleseed Creek Mystery series. Book 2, A Plain Scandal is also available. Book 3, A Plain Disappearance is due out in September 2013.Recommended. (I received a copy of this novel from the publisher for the judging process. The opinions expressed are mine alone.)

Chloe Humphrey is the new director of technology at a small college near an Amish community. Her first new friend is a young woman she rescues at the roadside, a woman who has just left her Amish roots to live in the English world. Now that Chloe has rescued Becky, she feels somewhat responsible for her, and so she allows her to room with her, temporarily. She soon makes friends with Becky’s brother, and settles into her job at the college. But one day Becky borrows Chloe’s car, and collides with a bishop’s buggy, killing him. What looks like a careless accident at first takes on a sinister aspect when it is discovered that the brake lines had been cut. Now it is up to Chloe to try to figure out who could hate her enough to wish her bodily harm. Not a typical Amish tale, this story has engaging characters in a suspenseful plot. A good start to a new series.

This is an Amish murder mystery. It was different and enjoyable. I liked how it twisted and turned. There were so many suspects that I was constantly changing my mind as to who was the killer. I liked the characters. I also liked the lessons on the Amish that were part of the story. I learned but I also was lost in a murder mystery. I didn't figure it out but I knew the reason, which was very plausible and realistic. Chloe is going to be fun to watch as she wriggles her way into Amish lives. She's an Englisher but the Amish seem to trust her. I do want to know what is going on with her and her father. I'll be reading this series. Well done!

Not my very favorite book, but this seems to be a promising mystery series, lying somewhere between cozy mystery and thriller. I found a lot of the characterizations to be hard to believe, but the suspense and the danger felt real. Full review to come.

A Plain Death by Amanda Flower is a sweet Amish mystery. It is the first book in the Appleseed Creek Mystery series. Chloe Humphrey has a new job at Harshberger College in Appleseed Creek as the Director of Computer Services. She is hoping to work there for two years to get the experience she needs for a job at a bigger college. On her way to her new home she encounters Becky Troyer. Becky is being hounded by new men and is desperate to escape them. Chloe rescues Becky and gains a new friend and roommate! Becky Troyer is nineteen and has decided to leave her Amish home. Becky wants to be an artists (portraying faces) and it is not allowed by her Bishop. Chloe agrees to let Becky temporarily stay with her. Timothy Troyer is ex-Amish and is now a carpenter in Appleseed Creek. Timothy is Becky’s brother. Timothy tries to convince Becky to go home, but he is unsuccessful. Becky wants to pursue her art and is not ready to settle down and get married.Chloe’s first week in Appleseed Creek is not what she expected. Her new rental home is very dilapidated. She meets her new employees and only two of them are welcoming. Then she gets a call from Becky. Becky has been looking for a job and decided to “borrow” Chloe’s car for an interview. Of course, Becky not having a driver’s license, insurance, or any driving experience did not stop her. Unfortunately, Becky had an accident and Bishop Glick is dead. Appleseed Creek Chief of Police, Greta Rose is looking into the incident. Becky could be charged with manslaughter. At the same time someone is terrorizing the Amish in the community. They are destroying property. Who is trying to hurt these peace loving people and why are they doing it? Chloe and Timothy set out to clear Becky and find out who are hurting the Amish. A Plain Death has romance, mystery, friendship, great characters, and a lovely setting! I give it 5 out of 5 stars. The mystery is pretty easy to solve, but I enjoyed the story and characters.

Every once in a while, I want to read a mystery, on my to be read bookshelves, I found book one and two of An Appleseed Creek Mystery series by Amanda Flowers. I have read her books before so after I figured one which was the first and settled down to enjoy an Amish cozy mystery. Cozy mysteries are a refreshing break after reading anything heavy and very intense. I needed a little reprieve from what is going currently in this frightening world.Chloe Humphrey, age 26, comes from Cleveland to Appleseed Creek where there is a strong Amish presence, to her new position as a director of technology services. As she nears the small rental that she sees a girl on the road being harrassed and ens dangered by two men in a pickup truck. Chloe rescue the girl and lets her stay overnight. The girl, Becky is an artist who has recently left her Amish family. Becky hunts for a job to repay Chloe for her board but gets into serious trouble. She "borrows " Chloe's car rental and tries to brake for a buggy and fails killing a well loved Amish bishop. The cause for the lack of brakes is determined later and then Chloe enlists the help of Becky's brother Timothy, who has not finished the requirements for Amish men to take their place in the community for an accident that caused him to doubt himself to be deserving of the role of an Amish man. There are many suspects and even a hallmark of the cozy, animals, Chloe's siamanese cat named Giga aka Gigabyte and Timothy's large mixed breed dog. Amanda Flower employs the right amount of suspense to keeo you turning the pages. I am expecting more character development in the next book and will enjoy meeting familiar characters again. I enjoyed this book and the pull of suspense to give me a little relief from the serious and tragic current events.

When Chloe Humphrey arrives in Appleseed Creek, Ohio to become head of the technology department at Harshberger College, the idea of a quiet, small town setting quickly becomes untrue as she picks up an Amish girl named Becky by the side of the road, who is being harassed by a couple of men from town. Becky pretty much plops right into Chloe's life (and home), making herself indispensible by cooking really good food. When Chloe's car is involved in a buggy accident, Chloe feels she must help Becky, and brother Timothy, figure out what really happened that day. I enjoyed the descriptions of the characters in the book, particularly Becky's Amish family. The welcome that the seemingly liberal order of Knox County gave Chloe seemed especially easy, considering she was brand new to the area.

It was a good introduction to the characters and gave enough information to keep me going throughout the book about the main character. I found the story to be well developed and it had a little surprise at the end the story which was welcomed. I think the extra characters were diverse. They were made more real by their flaws and that is not always visible in characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.I would like to thank Net Galley and B & H Publishing Group for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

Chloe Humphrey, a big city girl, moved to Appleseed Creek to take over the IT department at the local college. On her drive to the town she notices a young Amish girl being hassled by two scary looking men, so she gives her a ride. This act of generosity opens the door to other Amish friends, dangers, and problems. When her new roommate, the young Amish girl, borrows her car and kills an Amish Bishop, she decides to get involved to try to save her young friends.I totally enjoyed this book, and will definitely read the next in the series. I couldn’t put this down and really enjoyed the characters. This is not a typical Amish fiction book, it is just based in Amish country, and the Amish play background roles. The mystery has enough twists and turns to hold interest, and the characters have the depth that makes them friends. I would definitely recommend this for readers who are looking for a fun read that is not too simple.Received Galley from NetGalley.com

The first in what will prove to be a popular series that provides a truer perspective on Amish life than one sometimes gets in Amish novels. A melding of "English" and "Amish" and "ex-Amish" characters that offers insight into both the positives and negatives that face the Amish communities in central Ohio. The story kept one guessing completely, and I was not able to figure out "whodunnit" at all, but had to be told at the very end. I enjoyed this book on so many levels: the characters are interesting and you come to care about them; as a current resident of Knox County, Ohio, where the book is placed (loosely) the local references although cleverly veiled were fun to pick out; the story line kept me wanting to turn pages and read "just one more chapter" before heading to bed last night. I finished the book in two days and perhaps 5 hours of reading and I am not a fast reader. I've been working on two other books for more than a month. Don't miss the adventures of Chloe Humphrey - I can't wait for the next book!
