With TIFF just around the corner, Toronto tourism is at an all time high and the city is filled with silver screen actors both big and small. Whether you’re going to a premiere, or are invited as a VIP to one of the many TIFF cocktail parties at the city’s hottest hotels and venues, we have tips on how to swoon an actor, extra, or otherwise…
Be Confident
The best way to get someone’s attention is to exude confidence. Get your inner confidence by prepping for your eve out by doing things that make you feel your best. Our suggestions? Why not hit up your local yoga studio for a sweaty, endorphin-inducing package, then head over to a blow bar to get a blow-out? You’ll be feeling radiant and stress-free.
Work The Room
The best way to meet people, whether they are famous or just part of small sets, is to be approachable and to initiate conversation. When out, don’t stand in the corner with your closest girls, pounding back cocktails and people watching, or, worse, updating your social media feeds. Instead, work the room. Make your rounds, introduce yourself to others, compliment others (if genuine), and ask questions. People love talking about themselves so a quick way to get them conversing, and to want to continue doing so, is to lead with some questions, whether they be about an outfit, where someone’s from, why they were invited, etc.
Be Genuine
Like musicians, actors aren’t attracted to a fangirl. Instead, they are interested in someone who is genuine and who likes them for who they are as a person, not for what they do. If you find out the guy you’re crushing on is on the big or small screen, you can of course ask about his job, but don’t obsess over it or make it a big deal. To them it’s just a job and, like everyone, when night comes or they’re out at an event they want to enjoy their time and not have to focus on work. Play it cool, even if you watch them weekly on a Toronto-filmed sitcom.
Put Down Your Phone
In this day and age, anyone can record anything or tweet out who they’re with, at any second – even without notice, at times. Actors are extremely cautious of this. Mind their privacy. Sure, you might want to brag to your friends (and hope it gets back to your ex), but by doing that you’ll lose your chance at the prize. You would never tweet about (or tag, or take pictures with) a guy you met on Tinder on your first date, so why, pray tell, would you do it with an actor? Be respectful of his privacy and if you’re interested in building a relationship, remember that less is more. He’ll recognize your respect and that will attract him even further.
Steal Him Away
If things are getting hot and heavy (you little fox you!) ask him if he wants to go some place a little more tame, and if he’s game then bring him to your local watering hole or one of your fave hidden gems in the city. Not only will he appreciate that you aren’t trying to “show him off,” but he’ll get to see a great place in the city that he wouldn’t have had the opp to if it wasn’t for you, and you’ll also feel more comfortable in your own surroundings. Win-Win. One of my fave spots in the city for this is Dakota Tavern. The best part is there’s no cell reception so you’ll get to focus on one another, you can dance to the live tunes, and chances are no one will bother him because they’re only there to fawn over the band. Also: Best lighting in the city. You’re welcome.
