Man Threatened Son With Gun to Stay in School: Police

Police say Viktor Barkov pointed a Ruger SR40 handgun at his son's head

A west suburban man is behind bars because his motivational technique for getting his son to return to college was a little extreme—a gun, according to police.

Viktor Barkov, 55, of the 2700 block of North 75th Court in Elmwood Park was arrested at just after midnight Saturday and charged with aggravated assault and use of a deadly weapon, Pioneer Press is reporting.

According to police reports, Barkov was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife and 22-year-old son.

During the incident, he got a Ruger SR40 handgun from his closet and put the gun to his son’s head, police said.

According to police reports, he then said to his son, “If you don’t go back to school I’m going to put a hole through your head.”

Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano said when police arrived there was no confrontation between Barkov and officers, and the weapon was seized.

Barkov appeared in bond court Sunday and was ordered held on a $25,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for Tuesday in Maywood.
