WATCH: 50 years since Beatlemania took over Vancouver

WATCH: 50 years ago on Aug. 22, 1964, Beatlemania took over Vancouver’s Empire Stadium. It was the Fab Four’s first Canadian show and the band nearly started a riot. Jen Palma reports.

Fifty years ago tonight the British invasion officially took over the Lower Mainland.

The Fab Four chose Vancouver to play their first-ever Canadian gig.

The Beatles overwhelmed Empire Stadium on Aug. 22, 1964 with more than 20,000 fans shrieking so loudly, it drowned out the music.

Radio legend Red Robinson was the show MC.

He recalls how the band nearly caused a riot.

The Beatles manager sent Robinson on stage to calm the crowd down.

Even though it’s been 50 years since the Beatles played in Vancouver, their influence over music and pop culture can still be seen and heard.

The members of Beatles tribute band, Revolver, also credit the Fab Four for inspiring them. They performed on the PNE grounds Friday night.
