Middle School Reading Tutor Contest

Middle School Reading Tutor Contest - Team Dean Reading Coaches

The Mayor’s Office in partnership with Martha O’ Bryan Center is seeking 80 volunteers to be Team Dean Reading Coaches by working with students weekdays during the after-school hours between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in East Nashville middle schools including Bailey, Isaac Litton, and Jere Baxter. Students involved are 5th - 8th grade and are currently enrolled in our Reading Achievement Program (RAP).  RAP provides academic intervention, tutoring, homework help, and enrichment activities to students attending some of Nashville's lowest performing schools.

Volunteers will work one-on-one with a student 2 days a week for 1 hour sessions each day, for a total of 10-12 weeks (a total of 20- 24 volunteer hours). The program begins September 15 and ends December 18th. Volunteers will coach students on reading and encourage them to graduate. Training is required to participate and will include training in the Weikart Center’s Positive Youth Development model and guidance on how to work with a struggling reader.

Volunteers can select from one of the following training dates: September 8, 9, 10, or 11th from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. located at CWA-Cayce Learning Center @ 522 South 5th Street, Nashville, TN 37206.

Here’s the contest! By the end of the volunteer program (December 18th), the seven students with the best reading gains will receive a Kindle Fire. The seven volunteers working with these seven students will each receive a $500 education stipend. The prize can be used toward the cost of current college classes or toward student loan repayment.

Volunteers must pass a background check. Orientation/ training is required. This project supports Mayor Dean’s Cities of Service volunteering initiative, Impact Nashville. Impact Nashville mobilizes volunteers to assist with the city's greatest needs in the areas of environment and education. http://Nashville.gov/volunteer
