FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- A lightning strike during a training exercise Thursday in Jefferson County injured six soldiers.

The incident occurred some time around 8:40 p.m. on Range 44 at Fort Drum, Julie Halpin, a Fort Drum spokeswoman, said.

The injured soldiers -- who belong to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment of the Army's 10th Mountain Division -- were taken in ambulances to the hospital. The extent of their injuries wasn't known, though Halpin said their injuries were not life-threatening.

It wasn't clear how the lightning injured the soldiers during the field training exercise Thursday.

The injuries happened just a day after military and civilian ambulance crews and hospitals carried out a mass casualty drill in the area, The Watertown Daily Times reported.
