Craig Lowndes dominates to race two win at Queensland Raceway

Craig Lowndes dominated the final V8 Supercars race at Queenslands Raceway to win ahead of Triple Eight Race Engineering team-mate Jamie Whincup.

Lowndes got the best of Whincup in the start and was on his own in the lead after that.

Things were more hectic for Whincup who had to fend off attacks from several drivers, including Prodrive Racing’s Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert, as well as Nissan Motorsport’s Michael Caruso.

But the multiple champion managed to stay ahead to secure a Triple Eight Race Engineering 1-2 while Mostert claimed the final podium spot.

Caruso crossed the line in fourth ahead of reigning champion Winterbottom in fifth.

Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin got somewhat of a redemption from yesterday’s poor result to cross the line in sixth position ahead of Holden driver Tim Slade in eighth and Ford driver Chris Pither, who held pole position for yesterday’s race, in eighth.

Shane van Gisbergen, who won the race yesterday, had a terrible day. The Holden driver dropped down to finish 12th after a strategic mistake by pitting as Scott Pye went into the gravel, expecting a safety car session.

The DJR Team Penske driver however managed to get himself out of the gravel and there was no safety car, meaning that Van Gisbergen lost valuable time and points on his title rivals.

Whincup is still in command of the championship, 110 points ahead of Van Gisbergen, 120 points ahead of Winterbottom and today’s winner Lowndes in fourth, 150 points behind his team-mate.

V8 Supercars continues on August 26-28th at Sydney Motorsport Park.
