Works Engineer

Job Summary:

As a Works Engineer at Pulman Steel, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our manufacturing facility. This multifaceted position encompasses fault finding, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of equipment vital to our production processes, including saws, overhead gantry cranes, profile and plasma CNC machines, and drilling machining centres. In addition to equipment maintenance, this role also involves general maintenance of the HGV fleet, coordination of subcontractors, maintaining asset filing systems, and fostering strong relationships with contractors. The ideal candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Office, possess mechanical expertise with a 60/40 mechanical to electrical bias, and ideally have experience in the steel industry or a military background.

 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct fault finding, diagnostics, and repairs on saws used for cutting steel, ensuring optimal performance and precision.

2. Diagnose and repair overhead gantry cranes to maintain safe and efficient material handling operations.

3. Troubleshoot and repair profile and plasma CNC machines to ensure precision and productivity in steel processing.

4. Identify and resolve issues with drilling machining centres to uphold accuracy and efficiency in manufacturing processes.

5. Perform general maintenance on the HGV fleet, addressing defects promptly using the latest software tools for efficient management.

6. Organize and prioritize maintenance tasks in accordance with production schedules to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency.

7. Undertake general building maintenance tasks, including fault finding and repairs, to ensure a safe and functional work environment.

8. Coordinate periodic servicing for the HGV fleet, manage paperwork, and liaise with subcontractors to ensure timely and quality service.

9. Maintain asset filing systems for repairs, maintenance, and servicing records, ensuring accuracy and accessibility of documentation.

10. Work collaboratively with staff to plan equipment downtime strategically to optimize efficiency and minimize disruption.

11. Fabricate parts as required in our workshop to support equipment repairs and maintenance.

 

Qualifications desirable but not all necessary

City & Guilds Certificate in Engineering or the BTEC in Operations and Maintenance Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

- Proven experience in maintenance and repair of industrial equipment, preferably in the steel manufacturing industry or from a military background, ideally REME.

- Proficiency in fault finding, diagnostics, and repair of mechanical and electrical systems.

- Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office applications.

- Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

- Valid driver's license and ability to operate HGV vehicles.

Transport Manager

Responsibilities:

In this role, reporting to the Operations & Production Manager, you will be responsible for organising the company's fleet of 15 HGVs and their drivers, ensuring compliance with current regulations, and managing daily delivery schedules.

 

Key Duties:

  • Maintain a valid Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence. Undertake a 2-day refresher course if CPC certification is over 5 years old.
  • Possess a Class 2 HGV Licence with full CPC and digicard.
  • Undergo training on the Company Hiab.
  • Utilise computer systems to plan delivery routes for the next day or address urgent deliveries on the same day (MaxOptra).
  • Monitor driver performance and adherence to company protocols.
  • Oversee vehicle checks and promptly address any issues with in-house engineers or external service providers.
  • Handle disciplinary matters within the Transport Department.
  • Manage Driver Infringements, conduct debriefs, and provide retraining when necessary (Logistics UK Vision).
  • Assign vehicles and drivers for scheduled runs and generate necessary paperwork.
  • Coordinate collections from suppliers and outworkers as needed.
  • Arrange Safety Inspections, including loaded and unloaded brake tests, and Organise Tacho Calibration alongside Hiab LOLER Inspection.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Purchasing, and Production departments to address order and stock-related issues.
  • Manage the Company's Operators License account.
  • Plan Abnormal Loads on ESDAL.
  • Uphold a robust Health and Safety culture among drivers and company wide.
  • Prepare documentation for External Audits.
  • Organise driver training sessions, including inductions and CPC.
  • Assist in manoeuvring vehicles on-site and loading when required.
  • Undertake delivery runs during peak periods or in case of driver shortages.
  • Monitor driver overtime and manage holiday requests.
  • Provide support to shift or departmental managers as necessary.
  • Engage in manual handling tasks.
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklift trucks.
  • Conduct Monthly Random gate checks and Management Checks on vehicles.
  • Download vehicle tachograph data using the company card and upload to Vision.

 

Working Hours: 40 hours per week, to be agreed upon.

Salary: Dependent on experience.
