Google’s Project Sunroof Wins UN Climate Change Award
Google’s revolutionary Project Sunroof has been announced as one of thirteen recipients of the United Nations ‘Momentum for Change’ climate change award winners.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) announced the thirteen recipients of its Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activity Award on Thursday, which springs out of the UNFCCC’s larger Momentum for Change initiative, designed to “shine a light on the enormous groundswell of activities underway across the globe that are moving the world toward a highly resilient, low-carbon future.”
Perhaps the most high-profile recipient this year was Google’s Project Sunroof, launched in August of 2015 to provide homeowners with the opportunity to easily calculate the possible solar energy potential of their rooftops, utilizing Google’s extraordinary mapping software. However, the winners also included the European Union’s largest crowdfunding platform for community solar projects, as well as a project in Malaysia initiated by Ericsson that uses sensors to provide close-to real-time information to restore decreasing mangrove plantations.
