FIRST AND SHORT

Oak Creek's Evans still in the running to make Packers

Former Oak Creek football player Marwin Evans remains a long shot to make the Green Bay Packers, but after a great exhibition game last week, he still has a fighting chance.

The safety out of Utah State, who fell through the cracks of the NFL free-agent signing process after the draft for a number of reasons, will suit up again for the Packers on Friday. Longtime Packers beat writer Bob McGinn penned a piece for Thursday's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that chronicled the twisting journey Evans faced on his way to this opportunity.

To say Evans was a "late bloomer" is an understatement. He even fell short of our All-Suburban Team in 2010 as a senior at Oak Creek (and our "High Honorable Mention" list, essentially second team). Our own Steven L. Tietz wrote an article earlier this year about Evans' journey that includes a rundown of some infamous misses on our All-Suburban Team.

Evans' alma mater, Oak Creek, is 2-0 following a win Thursday night over Mukwonago, by the way. The Packers will play the San Francisco 49ers in an exhibition game at 9 p.m. local time Friday, so high-school football fans can catch the action on the radio driving home from their local games.
