The Privatization of America's Prison System

by Lindy Greene (lindygreene [at] roadrunner.com)
Privatization of the prison system and the National Defense Authorization Act will team up to support this big-business venture.
The CCA, or Corrections Corporation of America, wants to own and run the U.S. prison system. Once privatized, it becomes a "business" (not that the justice system isn't already exactly that) where policy is determined solely by profitability. The police and courts will be pressured to make more arrests, find more defendants guilty, and hand down harsher sentences. And they will either be bribed to do so or awarded bonuses and other incentives - which amounts to the same thing.

Now, let's link this up with the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act). It will all be so easy. They will no longer have to present probable cause, provide credible evidence of the commission of a crime, levy charges, or go through long and expensive trials carrying the risk of "not guilty" verdicts. They will be able to ferry anyone into the prison system for an indefinite term and thus guarantee 90% (or better) occupancy.

Where will this leave the legal profession? I guess your right to have counsel will become irrelevant. If you can be imprisoned with no charges against you, for what reason would you need an attorney? How would he or she defend you against or refute non-existent charges and evidence?

Don't sit back and comfort yourselves with the notion that the NDAA applies only to those suspected of involvement with foreign "terrorists." You know the drill by now. These policies are always expanded or broadened to penetrate the domestic arena. And my position is that such is and always has been the intended target. Let's be even a little more specific: It's those citizens at home who are commenting about, reporting on, or protesting against what the government is doing.

This is the ultimate weapon. It goes way beyond L-RADS, mace, tasers, batons, and rubber bullets. Are you willing to risk life in prison for speaking out or protesting? The government will never revoke the Bill of Rights. It will always tout itself as a supporter and defender of your civil liberties. It will simply redefine and reinterpret their expression as forms of "terrorism" under the guidelines of the NDAA. Privatization of the prison system and the National Defense Authorization Act will work in tandem to promote big business masquerading as justice.

As I am wont to say, "Sit back and watch it go down."
