Description

Ban This Series: Documentaries from the seven countries included in the travel ban enacted by executive order on January 27, 2017.

It has been years since this Academy Award–nominated doc from Laura Poitras (Citizenfour, The Oath) last screened in Toronto. Dr. Riyadh runs a free medical clinic in Baghdad, and is also running in an upcoming election. Tensions over the U.S. occupation are running high, but Riyadh tries to convince locals to believe in democracy, even as his waiting room fills with patients from the ever-increasing violence. With urgency and compassion, My Country, My Country follows the agonizing predicament of one man caught in the tragic contradictions of the U.S. occupation and its project to spread democracy in the Middle East.
