Pitting minorities against one another: Zimmerman is half-Peruvian & speaks Spanish

There is *nothing* in this post to distract from the KILLING of Trayvon MARTIN. But from the beginning the label of "White" was put on the shooter and there is another thread on this page pointing out that Wingnut gun nuts are "throwing Zimmerman under the bus to save the Stand Your Ground" thing. Also, as is quoted in this o.p.'s link, the shooter's being part of a minority group does not exclude racism as a *possible* factor.

There was a comment somewhere about ZIMMERMAN's being called "White," "Do they call President OBAMA 'White'?"

Florida shooter George Zimmerman not easily pigeonholed

By Manuel Roig-Franzia, Tom Jackman and Darryl Fears
The Washington Post

.... Why are they calling him white, wondered Paul Ebert, the Prince William County commonwealth's attorney who knew Zimmerman's mother, Gladys, from her days as an interpreter at the county courthouse. Zimmerman's mother, Ebert knew, was Peruvian, and he thought of her as Hispanic. ....

"You have people with Anglo first and last names who speak perfect Spanish and are from Puerto Rico. And you've got a third- or fourth-generation Joey Gonzalez from Tampa who can't speak a word of Spanish." ....

"Who is Hispanic and who's not is not as clear as other ethnic groups," said Martinez-Fernandez. "There's no such thing as a Hispanic race. It has to do with origin, culture and race. Some people argue that language should be a part. All this complicates identity." ....

"There's a sense that one group has been harmed historically more than the other," Martinez-Fernandez said. "There's been a history of the dominant group in power pitting one group against the other. I think we have not fought together. There have been few instances of that."

Post staff writers Brady Dennis, Sari Horowitz and Jeremy Borden contributed to this report. Material from The Orlando Sentinel is included in this report.

It doesn't matter whether Zimmerman is Anglo, Latino, Peruvian, or French. He shot somebody and it needs to be investigated.

What is it you don't understand?

And your post doesn't really help, because in many areas of this country there is no love loss between Hispanic and Black communities!

You see the president is multiracial, and has indentified as being black since he was a little boy...so why would you call him "white"?

Or, for you to decide that I was the one who posed the question about the President.

Please, let others participate in this thread who "get" the o.p. Thanks.

Does anyone think that could possibly be why they seem unwilling to prosecute? It would not be the first time in that
city that offspring of county employees got deferential treatment. A cop's son assaulted a homeless man and was not charged.

About a thousand miles from Sanford, so I doubt there was any favoritism involved from that angle.

shown then. So what is the point you are trying to make? The bottom line is you should not be able to kill an unarmed child and walk home with the gun in your possession and never be charged with a crime.

I can only say that I selected the article because of my appreciation of what it says and I said what I said and I don't see how what I said is not coherent.

So, I'll just let this thread meet its fate without any further assistance from me. I know that there are DUers out there who "get" it. Thanks.

"Hispanic" is an inherently ridiculous ethnic category, honestly; it means, in common usage, "Spanish-speaking Amerindian or mestizo" and doesn't mean "Spaniard" (Spaniards being white Europeans). Based solely on the evidence available from the 911 call, Zimmerman very obviously saw Trayvon Martin as an intruder and potential criminal because he was black. Which, as far as any discussion of race in this case matters, is the only relevant issue. Not whether Zimmerman himself is white, Hispanic, or something else.

in which I believe that there was clearly a "racist" motive involved irrelevant if Mr. Zimmerman was green, purple, magenta or rainbow color, I can say that the article is right. I am hispanic but just the fact that I live in North America puts me in a "cultural limbo" both here in the mainland and in the US territory I happen to be born. Of course, the topic of the experience of hispanics in America are better left to be discussed perhaps in the DU Latin/Hispanic forum.

But just like in the case of Zimmerman, my first/last name are not typical of hispanics but Dutch (grandfather on dad's side was from The Netherlands). Furthermore, my military ID said at one point that I was "white" and NOT ONE person asked my opinion if I was white or black or brown or with polka dots for that matter. My discharge papers and military health records say I am white. The census I received a couple of years back asked me if I considered myself black or white hispanic, and so almost every employment or health record I'm to sign!!! How is one supposed to answer a question like that? I am hoping that the office of the census places a skin-color chart someday in order to "choose" a color just for them.

So yes, I agree with what the articles says. At times I have felt as if I have been placed in the middle of a race war and no one asks me in which side I am to agree. Republicans have been telling African-Americans that Hispanics are taking away their jobs, at least that was one talking point in Faux News at the time the were pushing for a border fence between Mexico and the US. After Katrina pundits in Faux News (of course) spoke of "illegal aliens" or "them mexicans" taking over Louisiana and threatening the "cultural heritage" of the area because now African-Americans were displaced while contractors were going crazy hiring "mexicans" .

One thing for sure, the right will throw ANYONE under the bus just to save that stupid law.

...less on the facts of the case than on Zimmerman's character. And whether or not he's a racist.

It's because they know the evidence is there he shot and killed someone, and he'll be convicted for it. However a hate crime charge will add 10-15 years.

I think that's the framing of the race discussion, at least from the perspective of those participating in the circus so far.
