Dear Members, Partners, and Stakeholders,

 

There's a common misconception that math is learned only in schools. In reality, math is learned everywhere, all the time, starting from the earliest age. Without even realizing it, a child who is sorting rocks, comparing sizes of toys, or counting stairs -- is doing math.

 

In fact, early math skills predict later academic achievement more than reading abilities or social-emotional development. Research shows that entering kindergarten with strong early math skills is the best predictor of eighth-grade academic achievement regardless of race, gender or socioeconomic status.

 

That is why in 2016 a dedicated group of community organizations and philanthropic funders formed the . They recognized that the nascent field of family math needed greater unity to help close the achievement gap, provide opportunities for families to support children's math learning, and address systemic challenges facing families of low-income households and families of color in particular. This year, a selection committee composed of parents, project partners, and the project's current funders, the and , embarked on a search to find a permanent home for this growing movement.

 

NAFSCE, along with our lead partner, the Early Math Collaborative at Erikson Institute, is thrilled and honored to have been chosen to serve as the new home of the family math movement. Additional partners include the , which will bring its focus on equity to the initiative, and the which will tap into its strong community networks.
