When an Earl Meets a Girl (Chase Family Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
♥ A nobleman and a common girl
♥ A close-knit, meddling family
♥ A trunkful of jewelry
♥ A dastardly kidnapping
♥ Steamy romance!
From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Royal comes the first novel in her beloved series featuring the “outrageously funny, loyal, compassionate, and unconventional” Chase family.
Descended from generations of jewelers, Amethyst Goldsmith loves her craft nearly as much as she loves her family. But she hates that her wedding is mere days away. Amy is promised to her father’s small-minded apprentice, the last man on earth she could ever love, honor, or especially obey. But the date is set, the dress is ordered, and there’s no way out—until the devastating Great Fire of 1666 sweeps through London, shattering her workaday world and recasting her fate…
Colin Chase, the Earl of Greystone, doesn’t believe in fate. He believes in hard work and securing his family’s future, which means marrying the wealthy, high-born Lady Priscilla Snobs—er, Hobbs. When he rescues a lowly jeweler’s daughter from the inferno, he’s only taking pity on a broken young woman. But as the pieces begin to mend, Amy emerges. Beautiful, passionate, playful Amy, who maddeningly captures his family’s hearts. Soon Colin fears that if he lets his guard down for even a moment, he might find his own heart held hostage as well…
Snowed in together at empty, crumbling Greystone Castle, an earl and a common girl can’t help surrendering to desire. But when the dream is over and reality catches up with them, can they find a way to make their two worlds one?

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2019This is my first ever book by Lauren Royal and it certainly won't be my last.
Lord Colin Chase is an extremely handsome, privileged, tall, elegant member of Charles II's Court. He is betrothed to a cold-hearted heiress, who is helping him rebuild his beloved Greystone Manor with her money. This suits Colin, he is not interested in a love match, until a chance encounter in a jewellery shop introduces him to the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, Amethyst Goldsmith. He cannot take his eyes off her, buts she's not for him, an Earl and a shopkeeper, he doesn't have time for love, he has his life all mapped out, but then the Great Fire of London happens and his life is turned upside down. Amethyst is not only beautiful, but extremely talented, kind, quick minded, clever, but trapped by her father's wishes and the promise of keeping the jewellery business going, no matter what.
This is a most enchanting, passionate and humorous tale. The characters are strong, very likeable and totally believable, so too are Colin's sister Kendra and his brothers Jason and Ford.
A secondary story runs alongside this main story, so you never quite know what is going to happen next.
Lauren Royal's writing is magical. She cleverly conjours up the atmosphere of London, King Charles II's scanadalous Court, fashion, court life and behaviour of England in 1666, and she leaves you wanting more.
I shall be quickly moving on tot he next book in this delightful series, Emerald.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2013A very enjoyable historical romance that's a little bit different because it's set in the Restoration.
It's love at first sight for Amethyst when she sees the handsome Colin Chase in a procession celebrating the restoration of King Charles II -Just two problems stand in their way - she is a child and a jeweller's daughter and whilst he is an aristocrat gentleman.
The story picks up a few years later when Colin visits the jewellers where Amethyst works and although he can't admit it to himself, starts to fall in love. Events gather pace as the Fire of London sweeps through London and throw Amy and Colin together...
Amethyst was refreshing on a number of levels. It was good to read a historical romance set in the Restoration, and the story never let up. Even when (spoiler alert) Amy and Colin are married , the twists don't stop coming and I thoroughly enjoyed the story right to the last page.
I read some of the 1 star reviews (on Amazon.com) and frankly, I can only assume they were written by people who don't like or understand the HR genre. I have no hesitation in recommending this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2014Fortunately I had the day off work today, stumbled across your book, I read this book from start to end (and reluctantly did some laundry in between), before rushing back to read further chapters in Amy and Colin's story, and very pleased I am to have found it on Kindle.
A very good read, and well written, the author has even gone to the trouble of proof reading and editing, which is such a joy for the reader, if I could give you six stars I would.
One thing I should also mention, thanks to the author who has gone to the trouble of explaining the source of her inspiration for the places used in her novel, and who the characters are loosely based on, and indeed has incorporated into her story real characters such as the paramour of King Charles, very interesting and unexpected information, the sign of a excellent writer.
I will get the follow on stories to find out what happens to the rest of the family.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 August 2023This book was set in the seventeenth century and when it started with the great fire of London I was really hopeful, but I think it was a little sparse on historical detail.
The Chase family were an interesting set of individuals and like all aristocratic families they had a castle to upkeep. Amethyst as a lady jeweller was interesting, as this would have put her in the rising bourgeoise. Her fiancé who was promised both her and the business added drama. Her kidnapping points to the problems of forced marriage during this period where wealthy heiresses were abducted. This was the only real drama in the book and it would have been nice to have a stronger storyline.
Like all good romance stories it had a happy ending but it was mediocre at best.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 May 2014The story was sound and nothing bugged me when I read it, but somehow I didn't care much for Amy, maybe because she was a little too perfect to me, even despite the bad events in her life.
Also, I have mixed feelings about the fact that I found the story too sweet, but then I also loved it because it was sweet !
But this aside, what really stood out for me was the interaction between the main characters. They were all extremely vibrant, and I had a great time reading the dialogues and the scenes when they were together, to the point of finding myself smiling or laughing. I think Lauren Royal did well with them, for me they completely brought the story to life, the joy and happiness one minute, the sadness and the worry the other.
Five stars for raising this many emotions in me, looking forward to Emerald and most of all Amber: Kendra is some lady, and I'm eager to see what happens to her :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2016A historical romance set in the English Restoration period. A light seamless read as Amethyst, a jeweller's daughter, finds herself homeless during the Great Fire of London. Undaunted she is lucky to be saved by Colin Chase, a member of the aristocracy. She is empowered by the experience enough to seduce him. The fact that both are engaged to different people only complicates matters. All ends on a happy note in the end.
I enjoyed the fact that Amethyst had the ability and talent to design jewellery, something her status as Lady Chase would not permit her to do. A plucky young lady, she manages to alter that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wundervolle Lovestory

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!
Fell in love with Lauren Royal's writing when I read this book. Lauren painted a beautiful historical scene with well etched characters, good storyline, amazing dialogues and hot, steamy romace between the protagnists. The intricacies of jewelry design painted lovely pictures of jewelry pieces that Lauren may have envisiobed:) Thank you! Must Read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! You'll love it!
That says it all. It's a great romance and told in a great way. It's very hard to put down so I didn't until I finished. You'll like it and there's lots of action to keep you up at night to read more. Trust me!
