How to Work Around a Bad Wi-Fi Connection

Tags: , , Network Management
If you are dealing with a computer that suddenly will not connect to Wi-Fi, here are the steps that you should detect to determine if the problem is your Wi-Fi or your computer.

Your office relies on Wi-Fi to keep the doors open and your to-do list moving. If your Wi-Fi suddenly cuts out in the middle of sending an email or editing an online spreadsheet, it can be devastating to your workflow. If you are dealing with a computer that suddenly will not connect to Wi-Fi, here are the steps that you should detect to determine if the problem is your Wi-Fi or your computer.

Is It You or the Wi-Fi?

Start by determining whether the problem is with the Wi-Fi connection itself or your computer. You can do this by asking a coworker if their computer is still connected to the network or taking out your smartphone to see if it is connected. If everyone else has Wi-Fi that is working properly, it’s a sign that the problem is with your computer and not with the Wi-Fi network itself.

If the Issue is Your Computer

The best thing to do when you think the issue is your computer is to check the Wi-Fi to make sure that it is turned on. Next, turn it off and on again. Try quitting your browser and re-starting it to see if the Wi-Fi is working. If that doesn’t work, turn your entire computer off and on again. If that doesn’t automatically restore Wi-Fi to your computer, select the Wi-Fi network again and reenter the password.

If the Issue is Your Wi-Fi Network

Network issues are much hairier, depending on the complexity and size of your network. First, you should try to reboot your network by unplugging the modem and router. Let these rest and cool down for about five minutes before plugging them back in. Let them get warmed up again and try to connect to Wi-Fi again. If that doesn’t work, try using an Ethernet cable to see if the problem is with the Wi-Fi and not the internet itself.
