Bedroom trends to try in 2017

Thanks to this season’s fresh and fabulous colour and print trends, it’s easy-peasy to be stylishly good in bed. “It’s all about mix and match,” says Alex Van Der Sluys, co-designer at Kip & Co. “We love throwing together a bit of an unexpected cocktail of colour and print, so our advice this season is to embrace your adventurous side!”

BEDS

The bedhead is set to make a big return, providing impact and an eye-catching focal point. “Bedheads are both a statement and foundation piece to any bedroom,” says Fenton. “The right bedhead helps anchor and integrate the bed into the room. I love leather bedheads paired with muted brights or punchy patterns that can easily slot in behind any ensemble and make your bed the star of the show.”

BY THE BED

Last season, we saw everything from piles of books to upended milk crates standing-in for traditional bedside tables, now we’re seeing a mash-up approach to bedside styling. “It’s about mixing it up,” says Fenton. “If your tables are a pair, use mismatched lamps and vice versa. This season we recommend mixing marble and timber, for example a white cedar hourglass stump layered with a tabletop made of Italian Carrara marble.” 

When it comes to lamp styles, form meets function with stylish pieces that effectively create ambience. When selecting your lamps, juxtapose the traditional with the trendy for bedroom styling with longevity. “Choose one that is more of a classic style and team with a fun, quirky piece,” agrees Fenton. “We use lights in the form of monkeys, cockatoos, poodles and greyhounds to liven things up right now.”

BED LINEN

Coming into the warmer months, winter bedding should be replaced with lighter, but equally cosy, bedding. “It’s about layers – lots of layers of colour and texture, starting underneath the bed with a patterned rug,” says Fenton. “A beautifully made bed can make a room sing. When choosing sheets this season, it’s linen all the way. Not only does it breathe better, it creates a relaxed, lived-in look that is essential when dressing your home. Don’t be afraid to mix and mismatch pillowcases with bed linen, even if it’s choosing different shades of a similar hue. Patterned scatters get our tick, as do textured throws and hides for added interest,” she says.

When choosing your layers, think texture and a deliciously fresh colour palette. “French linen, soft textured cotton blankets and throws, and a splash of velvet do the trick,” advises Van Der Sluys. “This season we’re loving feminine pastels like apricot and lavender. Create your own secluded retreat with lots of floating layers of linen, a chunky throw with luscious oversized tassels, velvet pillow cases, a couple of giant euros and a pea cushion or two – voila!” she says.

BEDROOM ACCOUTREMENTS

Jungalow styling comes into-its-own this season, with potted plants, flowering orchids and retro-style ferns replacing vases of cut flowers.  “Add some life to your bedroom with lush, luxurious potted plants and leaves in assorted ceramic pots and planters,” says Fenton.  Add a scented candle, piles of glossy tomes, a good novel and a silk eye mask by the bed, and you are all set for a lazy and stylish spring.
