Suspended Alamo officer was previously fired from sheriff’s department

ALAMO, Tenn. — A local police officer arrested for domestic assault over the weekend was terminated from the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office six years ago, according to his personnel file.

Sheriff Troy Kylce said Alamo Assistant Police Chief Steve Hooks was arrested Saturday night for domestic assault against his wife, sending her to the hospital.

“At this point, I understand there may be some rib injuries, some visible injuries to the eye. It was pretty serious,” the sheriff said.

Alamo Police Chief Jim Knox said Hooks was suspended without pay as soon as he was arrested and that he will stay that way until his case is finished.

“Domestic violence is a crime that is taken seriously no matter who the offender is,” Chief Knox said. “Whether they are a police officer or a private citizen, it needs to be looked into and justice needs to be served.”

According to Hooks’ personnel file with the Alamo Police Department, he started with them in July 2011 and has had no write-ups or disciplinary actions.

However, prior to working at the police department he worked at the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office for six years from April 2004 to June 2010 and was terminated for insubordination and failure to respond to duty.

Sheriff Klyce said he would not comment on why Hooks was terminated from the sheriff’s department.

The sheriff said Hooks is expected to appear Thursday morning in Crockett County General Sessions Court.
