Brewery Tour of Halifax & Dartmouth

If you haven’t noticed lately, I’ve been on a major craft brewery binge this last year. I love visiting them in my own city of Toronto but also when I travel because I think they all are super unique, a great local watering hole, and I love tasting all the different types of beers out there.

This past summer I did an East Coast trip where I visited Prince Edward Island and Halifax. During my time there I visited a ton of breweries and there were so many I didn’t get to go to too! However, I curated my tour based on the breweries that offered beers that are my personal favs like sours, ciders, or wheat/lighter beers.

To help plan your own brewery tour, I’ve compiled a list of the breweries I went to and a suggested routes to hit them all. I did a half day doing the Halifax breweries, and a half day doing Dartmouth but feel free to mix and match what you prefer.

Halifax

Good Robot

This was by far my fav brewery I went to in both Dartmouth and Halifax. It had a great outdoor patio, adorable robot themed decor, tasty (and creative) beers, and overall I just loved the ambience.

Hours:
Monday-Friday 11am-2am
Saturday & Sunday 10am-2am

Chain Yard Urban Cidery

This super cute cider place is in an up and coming neighbourhood and just around the block from Good Robot. They had a variety of ciders, and a great food menu. I found most of their ciders a bit too sweet for my liking, but it’s the perfect spot for those that don’t love beer, or like sweeter drinks!

Hours:
Sunday-Wednesday 11:30am-11pm
Thursday-Saturday 11:30am-12am

Sourwood Cider

This new cider spot just opened up a few weeks before I visited, even some locals didn’t know about it yet! I loved the decor in this cute little hole in the wall, and their snacks and ciders were really good. I tried a rose cider while there and they had a wide variety of others to choose from.

Hours:
Monday-Thursday 3pm-11:30pm
Friday 3pm-12am
Saturday 1pm-12am
Sunday 1pm-11:30pm

Propeller Brewing Company

I actually didn’t make it here but I tried their beer at a few restaurants in town and it was delicious. They have a list of regular beers, and also some fun seasonal beers. I had a delicious Dark Berry Sour Ale.

Hours:
Monday & Tuesday 10am-8pm
Wednesday & Thursday 10am-10pm
Friday & Saturday 10am-12am
Sunday 12pm-10pm

2 Crows Brewing Co.

This brewery is located pretty central in downtown Halifax with a cute little patio off the side. I had a delicious sour beer here and I really loved the location of this spot combine with the selection of beer.

Hours:
Sunday-Wednesday 12pm-10pm
Thursday-Saturday 12pm-12am

BONUS!

A few other notable breweries in Halifax that you may want to add to your list are Garrison and Alexander Keith’s. Keith’s is one of the most widely known breweries, however, it is very commercialized and touristy. You can get their beer across the country so it’s not really that local, craft brewery experience. They do organized tours daily and cost around $26 CAD.

Dartmouth

New Scotland Brewing Co.

This was a super cute brewery with a great patio. However, I’m not going to lie, I didn’t love the beers on my flight. They had a wide variety of brews though that are always rotating so there may be something there for you when you visit!

Hours:
Monday 11:30am-10pm
Tuesday-Thursday 11:30am-12am
Friday & Saturday 11:30am-1am
Sunday 12pm-10pm

Brightwood & Lake City Cider

I grouped these two together because this is a 2-in-1 brewery. They legit share the same building. Brightwood is more your traditional beer bar with some interesting concoctions. I had a kombucha beer when I was there! Lake City Cider is a cidery with a ton of yummy ciders on tap. Loved the vibe of both these places and they’re centrally located downtown Dartmouth.

Brightwood Hours:
Sunday–Thursday 12PM–11PM
Friday 12PM–12AM
Saturday 10AM–12AM

Lake City Cider Hours:
Monday-Wednesday 10am-8pm
Thursday-Saturday 10am-10pm
Sunday 12pm-5pm

North Brewing Company

This brew pub is just that, a brewery and a pub. They carry a ton of local beers, but also brew their own too! This is a great spot to go if you want to try a lot of local beers in one spot. Plus, they have an awesome patio and good food. Note they do have two locations. Their Ochterloney St. location is the one I recommend!

Hours:
Sunday-Tuesday 12pm-6pm
Wednesday-Thursday 12pm-7pm
Friday-Saturday 12pm-9pm

BONUS!

Another brewery I wanted to give a mention to that I never made it to was Nine Locks as it was a bit out of the way to reach on foot for me. A lot of locals recommended this spot to me so it’s likely worth a visit if you can make it happen!
