BBC NOW 2021-22 Season LIVESTREAM: Afternoon Concert with Ryan Bancroft & Daniel Pioro

Depicting Tapio, the animated forest spirit from Finnish mythology, Sibelius’ Tapiola chimes with melancholy, beauty and mystery. Hailed as a rising star, Cardiff-born composer Joseph Davies is not necessarily a composer naturally paired with Sibelius, however his exuberance and musical mastery make his work the perfect partner. Written for violinist Daniel Pioro, Parallax receives its World Premiere as the centre piece in this afternoon’s concert, before we move onto Sibelius’ brooding Fourth symphony, which whilst flickering with passion and tenderness, never quite escapes the shimmering darkness.
