COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - On this week's edition of OnPoint on WACH Fox we look at educating the whole child by finding innovative ways to challenge today's students.

Giving South Carolina's children an education that teaches them to be independent critical thinkers could be the most meaningful gift we can give them, right?

The 'I Promise School' in Akron, OH, funded and founded by former resident and current NBA star LeBron James, grabbed headlines recently because of all the wrap-around services it offers in addition to classroom instruction.

But the idea of educating the "whole child", providing those wrap-around support services that address a range of non-academic factors, has proven successful in many programs around the country.

Some of that success is also happening here in South Carolina.

Richland School District Two superintendent, Dr. Baron Davis, will be in the studio to talk about some of the non-traditional programs offered to students in that district, and the importance of making them available.

Also, in this month's edition of 'Ask Dr. Macie', contributor Dr. Macie Smith shows you how Leeza's Care Connection has teamed up with the Action for Unity campaign in Lexington-Richland School District Five to involve students in crafting music programs that are making a difference for those battling dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Lori Wenzinger, a sixth grade English and Social Studies teacher at Irmo Middle School, is an Action for Unity sponsor. She and one of her students will be in-studio to talk about the challenges students are taking on and the program they are working on with Leeza's Care Connection.
