TJ’s provision of much-needed building materials to the construction industry in Hampshire and surrounding areas has grown since quarrying commenced at their Hythe site in August. TJ bought into the Forest Lodge site in 2017, after identifying an opportunity to expand their service to their existing customers and beyond.
Quarries are where we get a lot of the natural materials needed to carry out the increasing construction projects that society demands. Two products are extracted from Hythe Quarry: soft sand and a well-graded golden gravel.
Hythe Quarry was identified in the Hampshire Minerals and Waste Plan (2013) as ‘the best option for continuing a local supply of soft sand and sharp sand and gravel from this part of south Hampshire’.
Planning permission for mineral extraction and restoration was granted in March 2017 and quarrying commenced in August 2018.

The aggregates that come from the quarry have many uses, most of which involve the construction industry. The ballast is ideal for onward screening/washing, bedding and drainage fill. The soft sand is suitable for blinding, bedding, general fill and mortar. It is also often used as a plastering sand.
The soft sand is also used as cattle bedding sand. The sand is in high demand for this purpose and a large volume of sand is delivered to local farms to fulfill this need.
The quarry is split into three phases, with completion planned for 2028. The site has been sectioned up into three areas and digging will take place in one area at a time. When digging starts on the next area, the previous area will be being filled at the same time. The quarry will be filled with inert soil from TJ’s muck away services, meaning that when the quarry is completed the site will be arable land.
TJ and Hythe Quarry are dedicated to supporting local causes in order to give something back to the community. TJ donated 10 tonnes of specialist path gravel to pave footpaths in Warren Copse, an ancient woodland in Fawley, Hampshire.
Warren Copse, a 13-acre site, was purchased by Fawley Parish Council as a Public Amenity in 2009 to complement Holbury Manor which it already owned. The volunteers responsible for managing the site, the Warren Copse and Holbury Manor Conservation Group, were keen to improve the footpaths by using locally sourced path gravel.
A member of the conservation group, Eddie Holtham, said “I’d like to thank TJ Transport for the donation. The wood has not been managed for nearly 100 years and this morning we have been coppicing an area of Hazel to try and bring it back to its normal life cycle.”
