Death Wish

If the Friday numbers are any indicator, it looks like the man vs. nature thriller The Grey starring Liam Neeson and directed by Joe Carnahan will win the weekend. And with the film doing so well in theaters, that means it's time to get the word out on the next project from Carnahan. 24 Frames reports The A-Team helmer will write and direct a remake of the 1974 vigilante film Death Wish which featured Charles Bronson as Paul Kersey, a liberal architect who morphs into an assassin after his wife and daughter are brutally attacked. He then takes it upon himself to clean up the criminal streets of New York City. Read on!

This isn't the first time that Death Wish has been tossed around as a potential remake as Sylvester Stallone became interested in the project before it got stuck in development hell around five years ago. Scott Free Productions (from Ridley and Tony Scott) will produce with The Grey producer Jules Daly, but no ohter details about the remake are known at this time. Who can step into the shoes filled by Bronson for the original film and four sequels, and will this turn into yet another action franchise? The first person that comes to mind is Jason Statham, but that doesn't seem like inspired casting to me at all. Ryan Gosling would be another good choice, but then there would be inevitable comparisons to Drive. Either way, with action like Smokin' Aces and The A-Team as part of his action repertoire, Carnahan seems like the perfect guy for a crazy violent romp like this. Thoughts?

I though Kevin Bacon did a good job in Death Sentence which is based off the same book the Death Wish movies are based on.

You're spot on! This should NOT be remade. Why not remake, Bronson's  weak film "Messenger of Death" instead? It needs it!!!

There are no good choices to replace Bronson because this should not be remade. I watched this maybe a year ago with a buddy of mine, and it still holds up. Another unnecessary remake to fill the pockets of lazy, unoriginal slobs.

Dammit. After I typed the slobs remark, I remembered I really like Carnahan.

If not a Stallone project (character is over 60), brother Liam is good pick for Kersey.

I second Kevin Bacon or Liam Neeson. But I also agree that this movie should NOT be remade.

I, also believe this remake/re-boot and "The Crow" shouldn't materialize! However, if this one does and I'm sure Carnahan will get the wheels turning quick, I'd say stick with Stallone and if not Sly, then Neeson- who would be perfect in his element! Bacon already has his vigilante flick in, "Death Sentence"!

This should not be made unless they can get Jeff Goldblum to appear as a thug for about 10 minutes.

Nice. That would be a great nod to the original.
