California-based contemporary label Cleobella is diving into the swimwear category with the launch of Cleobella Turquoise, an pure-play online brand that will be available on its e-commerce site and select Target stores and target.com starting Sunday.
Mirroring the Cleobella clothing and handbags bohemian aesthetic, the one-piece and bikini styles feature cutouts in colorful ikat and tie-dye patterns and black-grounded prints with embellishments such as crochet, beading, fringe and tassel-ties. Women’s styles will retail from $24.99 to $59.99 and the girls’ styles range from $22.99 to $24.99.
Founders and married couple Angela and Jim O’Brien started the line as a handbag collection in Bali in 2008 during a yearlong surf trip, and later moved to Sunset Beach, Calif., where they expanded into apparel and opened a Cleobella retail store in 2012. The brand is still inspired by the Indonesian island’s heritage, patterns and people, and the company works with local artisans there to help provide them with sustainable income and positively impact their community. The socially conscious company has found a following with many West Coast-based stylists and stylish locals.
“The brand extension and opportunity came at a very serendipitous moment. I have wanted to get into swimwear for a very long time, as I felt it was the one additional component that would complete Cleobella’s beach lifestyle story,” said Angela O’Brien, the brand’s creative director.
