Production of Newsies goes ahead thanks to community support

May 21, 2019

TDCIdrama_news.jpgThe show must go on despite a devastating act of vandalism to the theatre at Tommy Douglas Collegiate.

A fire extinguisher was discharged inside the school's theatre Wednesday evening and due to the time required to restore the facility, the school's production of Newsies: The Musical was quickly relocated to the theatre at Centennial Collegiate for its May 22-25 run.

"We are so proud of the cast and crew of Newsies for how they have handled this unfortunate situation. They have been positive, resilient, and determined," said Principal Colleen Norris. "We are grateful for the many offers of support from the community and from our friends and colleagues at Centennial Collegiate.

"Our students have used music and lines from the show as motivation to move forward and 'seize the day.' It has been beautiful to see them come together in solidarity during this time."

The performances of Newsies run May 22-25 with a 7 p.m. show each evening and a Saturday matinee at 1 p.m.

Norris said everyone involved in the production appreciates the support from Centennial Collegiate and the willingness to accommodate the performances, as well as the staff from both schools for their patience and assistance during the quick transition.

The cast, crew, teachers and Tommy Douglas community wish to share their appreciation for the efforts and contributions of many people in ensuring that students will have the opportunity to enjoy the result of their hard work and dedication.
