The 2016 Raindance Film Festival takes place in London from Wednesday 21st September to Sunday 2nd October, showcasing web series, VR shorts and indie films from around the world. We take a look at some of the movies screening, from those in search of distribution to those heading soon to VOD.

 

Sick of It All

After Prevertere, Window Licker and 1 World 100 Lonely, Brian McGuire returns to Raindance for the fifth time with this film noir that has its roots in The Little Prince. In this case, that would be LP, a kid played by Brian’s nephew Zion, who is kidnapped during the film’s opening credits – an act that throws us headfirst into a world of crime, cults, insurance salesmen and marital problems.

Gozo

Miranda Bowen makes her feature directorial debut with this suspenseful drama, which follows a young couple as they migrate to the titular island of Gozo. Things are far from the happy ending they had planned and while the story’s destination may be predictable, Bowen captures the gradual souring of their dream with a patience that pays off in buckets, treading the line between romance and horror with beautiful, haunting precision.

Ophelia Lovibond is excellent as Lucille, who finds herself increasingly alienated from her husband, Joe, and increasingly attracted to Daniel Lapaine’s sinister stranger, Riley, but where most genre films would leave the emotional woman to become hysterical, it’s Kennedy (who impressed as Will Scarlett in Doctor Who’s Robot of Sherwood) who finds himself haunted by strange noises and on edge. Throughout, the sound design adds an eerie tone to the Maltese backdrop, which Bowen shoots with an atmospheric eye that recalls Don’t Look Now in the best possible way.
