Another inspiring Breakthrough summer ends

"Hey Breakthrough!”

"Hey what!”

Breakthrough had another great summer of learning, teaching, and joy. Across the country, our affiliate network supported 6,000 students and more than 850 Teaching Fellows bringing high expectations, high support, and fun. Enjoy the sights and scenes of Breakthrough Summer 2022.

Breakthrough undertakes college success work nationally

Breakthrough Collaborative is entering a new frontier of student support, extending our work to not only help students get to college, but also supporting them through college. With generous support from ECMC Foundation, Breakthrough has created a College Success Networked Improvement Community (NIC) to investigate the impact and efficacy of various approaches to college success work. Breakthrough affiliates in New York, Central Texas, Greater Boston, and San Juan Capistrano – all with established college success programs – will collaborate with the National Office to advance these efforts.

A Q&A with Teaching Fellow alumna Ashley Atilano

This is Ashley Atilano’s third year of teaching. Her first year was completely online, six months into a global pandemic. The second year was her first year in-person, rife with pandemic stress and trauma, student absences, and staffing shortages. Despite it all, Ashley is eager and hopeful to have a school year that is as “normal, fun, and joyful” as possible.

While studying at George Washington University, Ashley spent two memorable summers as a Teaching Fellow at Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano. In 2019, she graduated from GW with a B.A. in English and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The following year, Ashley earned her M.A. in English Education from Stanford University.

We spoke to Ashley who is in her fourth week of teaching 11th and 12th grade English in South Gate, CA, about how things are going, her hopes for the year, and what inspires her to teach.

Carolyn and Jack Long: Moving the needle on education equity

Carolyn and Jack Long want their giving to make a lasting difference starting from today. As Carolyn puts it, “We don’t have forever to solve these problems. We need to get on top of them now.” As philanthropists, they ask themselves, “Is this a good investment, can we take this risk, and what will the outcomes tell us?”

Breakthrough Collaborative is one such investment. After decades of supporting Breakthrough Central Texas, they wanted to broaden their impact on a national scale. Last year, the Longs made a generous matching challenge gift to Breakthrough to motivate new and current donors to increase their giving and engagement.

Breakthrough selected to present at Grantmakers for Education Annual Conference

We are excited to join hundreds of education funders, experts, and partners at the Grantmakers for Education Annual Conference taking place October 18-20 in Austin, TX, where we will introduce our new Human First Framework. Breakthrough national staffers, Jenny (Jeongbin) Song and Phyllis Barsky Elick will lead a session entitled Listening, Learning and Evolving: Centering Humanity in Social-Emotional Learning in which they will share why and how we developed the Human First Framework.

Conference attendees will have two additional opportunities to learn more about Breakthrough by connecting with Breakthrough Central Texas college students participating in a Student Voice panel, as well as by attending a site visit at Breakthrough Central Texas.

Breakthrough Collaborative provides a proven pathway to success for thousands of students and aspiring educators every year. But we cannot do this work without you. We need you now, more than ever.
