The Daily Journal

VINELAND - The Daily Journal is calling on local nonprofit organizations to apply for thousands of dollars in grants available from the Gannett Foundation.

The application deadline is Feb. 16.

The grants are an opportunity for organizations to obtain funds for initiatives that make a positive difference in our community.

The 2017 grant recipients were:

  • Veterans Memorial Intermediate School in Vineland received $1,800 for its Operation Brown Bag community service outreach project that is conducted by eighth-grade members of the Safety Patrol. Each month, students prepare lunches for homeless individuals.
  • Chestnut Assembly of God Church/Dream Center of Vineland received $1,450 to help stock its food pantry; and purchase tents, blankets, socks and warm clothing for homeless people in Vineland.
  • Holy Cross Society of St. Vincent DePaul's community soup kitchen received $2,500 to purchase a freezer.
  • Holly Heights Elementary School in Millville received $1,000 to make wind chimes and mosaic tiles for its new Music Garden.

Organizations must provide a copy of their certification as a nonprofit by the Internal Revenue Service to be eligible.

They also must serve communities covered by The Daily Journal or its Atlantic County Weekly Newspaper Group, which is based in Hammonton.

Grants typically range from $1,000 to $2,500.

Requests for specific programs or projects receive higher priority than requests for general operating funds.
