Popular Salads Recalled For Potential E. Coli Contamination

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The USDA says Missa Bay of Swedesboro, New Jersey, is recalling over 75,000 pounds of salad products that contain meat or poultry because the lettuce may be contaminated with E. coli.  The salads were sold at Target, Aldi, Walmart and other stores.

The salad products were produced from October 14th 2019 through October 16th, 2019 and have establishment number “EST. 18502B” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The products were shipped to Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The Maryland Department of Health recovered an unopened package of Ready Pac Bistro Chicken Raised Without Antibiotics Caesar Salad with FSIS EST number 18502B on the label as part of a foodborne illness investigation.  Investigators tested individual ingredients in the salad and the lettuce tested positive for E. coli O157:H7. Any products from the same batch of lettuce are included in the recall.

Symptoms of E. Coli are diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration.  Infection is usually diagnosed through stool samples.

Consumers who have these products in their refrigerator are urged not to use them.  The USDA says consumers should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

The USDA says this is a class I recall.  A class I recall is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
