Elastic Minds: What are you thinking? Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Elastic minds are creatives who reimagine ways to create businesses, define how people engage in learning, and create tools to change markets. People who possess the ability to think elastically produce game-changing outcomes that are available globally. Creative abilities are highly desired attributes by most people. Musicians, artists, and business innovators are highly admired by people with an appreciation for achievements beyond the ordinary. In popular culture, fans celebrate the performance of others to the point of devotion. Most of the people we admire often have the gift of the elastic mind. People with elastic minds have the ability to hit the winning basket during a basketball game, sing with grace and feelings, or innovate the next technology that changes the business landscape. The skills of the elastic mind are, at times, the gifts we’re born with or the results of sweat and tears. Either way, we have the “can do” attitude that empower the creative and innovative spirit within. In the chapter titled “The Power of Observation,” Tracy Treacy describes her journey as a private practice therapist. Dr. Dave Martinez highlights his journey as a high school principal in the “Continual Learning” chapter. Kevin Castle, Managing Director of a technology consulting business is profiled in the “Climbing the Mountains – Clearing the Hurdles” chapter. In the chapter “The Story of Getting There,” Tammy Hawkins, Managing Director at Experis tells her story. Richard Dolman, Vice President at Agile42, gives insights into his leadership experience in the “Smaller and More Frequent Delivery” chapter. Alicia McLain, business owner of Operational Innovations, highlights her growth as a leader in the “Learn Fast – Inspect and Adapt” chapter. In the chapter “You Don't Know It Until You Do It,” Jill Freeman Stack, Principle at Jill Stack PR gives her testimony of her career growth into business ownership. James Wright, Agile Marketing Coach, tells his story of triumph in the “Check the Rearview Mirror” chapter. In the chapter “Pay it Forward for Those Who Follow,” Wes Kliewer Director of Learning at Project Insights, tells his story. Bobby Cooper Jr., Owner of El Cheapo Lift, shares his powerful moments of courage in the “When You Fall, Stand Again” chapter.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Writing the Elastic Minds: What are you Thinking? book was very exciting.  The time spent interviewing the 10 business leaders was insightful to learn so much about what was the inspiration for their success.  I believe you will learn from the experiences of the men and women who are entrepreneurs, directors, agile coaches, and a school principal.

Author/coach Dave Cornelius earned his Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership and is a lifelong learner, an experienced business and IT professional, and a globally go-to man who empowers others to achieve their very best. He specializes in coaching, training, and leading co-located and distributed teams to deliver quality innovations from concept to cash. He is the award winning founder of 5 Saturdays, a program that empowers students to become leaders in business and STEM fields. His initial book – TRANSFORMING YOUR LEADERSHIP CHARACTER: THE LEAN THINKING AND AGILITY WAY – remains a respected reference book for leaders of all arenas. ELASTIC MINDS is his second publication.

It is obvious why Dave’s coaching and lectures and investment in teaching is so highly respected: the style of his writing is both learned and enthusiastically entertaining. He offers his philosophy in the opening portions of the book and then shares the podium with famous people who have made a difference by using his concept of the ‘elastic mind.’

In his describing his concept of Elastic Minds he states, ‘Elastic minds are creatives who reimagine ways to create businesses, define how people engage in learning, and create tools to change markets. People who possess the ability to think elastically produce game-changing outcomes that are available globally. Favorable socioeconomic environments may enhance the ability to bring the game-changing outcomes to market faster, but the Internet has made it possible for all people to share ideas anytime and anywhere no matter their socioeconomic origin. The imagination of human beings has sustained our existence by creating new ways to harvest food, cure diseases, and cultivate our minds to think beyond what people of 2,000 years ago couldn’t imagine. The demand for human survival is elastic based on the availability of goods and services. An abundance in resources improves the odds for human survival; a shortage has the opposite effect. Elasticity is responsiveness to changes caused by an action. In business, elasticity refers to the relationship between the economics of price (rubber band flow) and market demand (pull). Demand is elastic when changing product prices increase or decrease sales. An example of elasticity is when Thanksgiving and Christmas blockbuster sales drive people to increase demand. The large well-known technology and product companies began from elastic minds and as small business ventures. Microsoft, Apple, Dell, Google, and Amazon were all once small businesses led by people with dreams larger than reality. Those dream became realities and are thriving today. The evolution of startups has become the new model for business development and is an amazing adventure for people young and old. Now, an individual or group of people can bring an idea from concept to market within six months or less, thus enabling small business growth to organically compete in markets reserved only for the established. Cloud computing, connected people, and the abundance of cheap tools make it possible to spawn new ideas faster than ever before. Audiobooks and podcasting are new ways to disseminate new knowledge, and are accessible anytime and anywhere there are mobile connections. A coffee shop owner or Uber driver can become well known through podcasting and blogging about topics that connect with people. The challenge for most of these new small businesses is achieving sustainable entities that can survive the typical one- to three-year life cycle of small business owners. Perhaps for some people, ideas are short-lived and small business don’t usually become big conglomerates. But that’s not human nature. The human condition is always the desire to live longer and preserve a legacy that spans decades and generations.’

Dave shares the six forms of thinking used by innovators to inform and direct business destinies toward success – Creative Thinking, Strategic Thinking, Critical Thinking, Design Thinking, Lean Thinking, and Systems Thinking. To provide depth to each of these areas Dave has provided reports from ten important creative elastic minds. This makes for a powerful series of actual experiences that demonstrate the depth of his impact and his knowledge.

This is a book that may be geared to industry minds, but the tenets are so strong that they will aid all readers. Grady Harp, January 18

I was quite impressed with the thought and work put into Elastic Minds. Dr. Dave Cornelius not only leads leaders, but he studies them and put their works into simple words so everyone can understand the processes and steps it took to get to the top. I honestly believe you would learn something new if you read this book five times, it is that in depth.
One of my favorite thoughts to chew on was “Elastic minds are creatives who reimagine ways to create businesses, define how people engage in learning, and create tools to change markets.” Facebook, in many cases, replaced email, which had replaced postal service. It took one thought and recreated how people communicated. Pinterest allows you to keep your cookbooks digitally. Amazon allows you to have access to your music, movies, ebooks, and shopping just about anywhere you are. These major businesses were once small, but they “continually sharpened the saw” to get the most out of their business and people changed when they saw how these businesses profited them.

This is a great and very profound book. Every time I read a book, I look for something new, something that will capture my interest and keep on reading, this book has that ability. I thought at first, tell me something I don't know yet, but as I was reading, I was amazed at confirmation of what I knew before about life and has forgotten as time passes by. It was a reminder of my life and my struggles as I was building my work experience. It brought reminiscence of my drive to succeed, and how I mindfully orchestrate the path that I layed bricks on. I just kept on reading and it ignites the drive to do better because the laying of bricks do not stop and the direction changes. You just need the elastic mind to recognize the flow and move with it. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Here is a self-help book that really broke down the basics of it’s topic. The author, Dave Cornelius really did a fantastic job of providing the information in a manor that was easy to understand. From the very beginning I could feel myself changing to use the information and skills that he provided. I really liked his use of real people and their stories of how they reached their goals. Making the information more real and attainable to my tasks and plans. The details that were provided helped move the book along as well as get the point across. The writing style really kept me interested. This is the type of book that you can read multiple times and still learn something new from. I found this book to be highly effective in teaching me how to use the Elastic Mind and use it in my every day task.

Elastic Minds takes a look at Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs who went well beyond just normal business thinking to become the successful owners of big businesses that are known all over the world. To quote the book “Elastic minds are creatives who reimagine ways to create businesses, define how people engage in learning and create tools to change markets”. It also looks at how we can have our own elastic minds and be more creative in order to thrive.
It is full of educational information and interesting information. Anyone who wants to expand their creativity in life, whether for business or personal reasons, should give this book a definite read.

I wasn't sure What to expect when I started this book and was surprised at the derail of learning that I acquired in reading it. The author does a great job of explaining the academic abilities of an elastic mind. The methods will help any one to explore the use of the mind in accomplishing things in business or life. I recommend everyone reading this book and using its educational value to further your own life. Well presented and easy to follow.

Elastic Minds: What Are You Thinking by Dave Cornelius is a self help book in a sense but also something you can go back to every now and then always finding something new to pick up on.

This book talks about elastic minds and the individuals that most often have those kind of minds. Mostly people with such minds is someone that re-imagine ways to create business, define how people engage in learning and design what is needed to change things. Not only business minded but have this ability but sports people, singers, everyone that is creative. A lot of people see elastic minds as a true gift that were either born with or something you work hard for.

The book gives examples of peoples stories that I found to be extremely interesting. It is a lot to take in at times but it is a book that you'll return to. I am singer so I guess I have an elastic mind too, I found that interesting.
