    This course is for individuals working in the Health and Social Care sector who provide patient care. It is particularly relevant to new employees, those on work experience, and students. The aim is to raise awareness of the key hazards associated with working in health and social care settings, and to highlight the main duties of employers and employees. It identifies hazards you may encounter in your work and establishes ways to minimise and manage the risks associated with these hazards.

  • The following six courses (Modules 1-6) provide an introduction to managing occupational health and safety in the Health and Social Care sector. They have been designed for employees with supervisory or managerial responsibilities in health and social care settings such as line managers and heads of department. The courses are suitable across all health and social care settings. Please note that these courses are intended as an overview and may need to be supplemented by more specific training and/or specialised advice.

    These courses are not intended to replace the workplace specific information and training needs required by health and safety legislation and they do not denote competency in a particular area.

    The courses (Modules 1-6) qualify for CPD points from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) for qualified nurses and midwives.

  • Legislation and Risk Assessment (Module 1)

    This course presents learners with an outline of the principal law covering safety and health at work and introduces you to the process of risk assessment and prevention. The content is suitable across all health and social care settings and provides concise practical strategies for everyday use.

    Course duration: 40-60 minutes

    Learning outcomes:

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • identify the main requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
    • list the four main categories of hazards in healthcare settings.
    • describe the risk assessment process.
    • apply the General Principles of Prevention in your workplace.

  • Safety Management (Module 2)

    This course presents learners with an outline of how to successfully manage occupational health and safety in the workplace. The content highlights the importance of safe systems of work, safety consultation and employee instruction, information and training in maintaining a safe workplace. Learners are also introduced to the principles of accident investigation.

    Course duration: 40-60 minutes

    Learning outcomes:

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • explain how to manage occupational health and safety in a healthcare environment.
    • identify the components and describe the function of a safety statement.
    • recognise the importance of safety consultation in the workplace.
    • recognise the value of information, instruction, training and workplace supervision, and
    • outline the steps in an accident investigation.

  • Biological Agent Hazards (Module 3)

    This course presents learners with an overview of the types and classes of biological agents that they may encounter in healthcare and introduces the concept of biological agents risk assessment. The content is suitable across all health and social care settings and provides concise practical strategies for everyday use.

    Course duration: 40-60 minutes

    Learning outcomes:

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • outline the four biological agent risk groups.
    • identify ways in which healthcare employees are exposed to biological agents in the workplace.
    • recognise the types of health effects associated with hazardous biological agents.
    • describe how to carry out a biological agents risk assessment in the workplace.
    • describe the measures used to safeguard healthcare employees from harmful effects of hazardous biological agents.

  • Chemical Agent Hazards (Module 4)

    This course presents learners with an overview of chemicals, how people can be exposed to them in the workplace and how to assess and control exposure to them. The content is suitable across all health and social care settings and provides concise practical strategies for everyday use.

    • identify chemical agent hazards that exist in the healthcare environment.
    • identify ways in which healthcare employees are exposed to chemical agents in the workplace.
    • outline the steps involved in a chemical risk assessment.
    • describe measures used to safeguard healthcare employees from the effects of hazardous chemicals.

  • Physical Hazards (Module 5)

    This course presents learners with two of the principle causes of accident and injury in health and social care - slips, trip and falls and manual handling (incorporating patient handling). The content highlights how to assess the risk of injury and how to put in place measures to eliminate or reduce the chance of an injury occurring.

    Course duration: 40-60 minutes.

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • list two of the main physical hazards found in healthcare settings.
    • recognise how slips, trips and falls can occur.
    • describe control measures relevant to slips, trips and falls.
    • explain how to conduct a manual handling risk assessment.
    • describe control measures relevant to manual handling.

  • Psychosocial Hazards (Module 6)

    This course presents learners with one of the main causes of injury and ill-health in health and social care - workplace violence and aggression. The content introduces the learner to the types of incidents that can occur and the effect on workers and outlines ways to prevent or reduce harm.

    Course duration: 40-60 minutes

    Learning outcomes:

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • define the terms violence and aggression.
    • recognise the effect that violence and aggression has in the workplace.
    • recognise how violence and aggression may occur in the healthcare setting.
    • describe control measures used to minimise the risk of violence and aggression.

  • A Short Course for Safety Representatives

    Course Image

    This course is designed for new and existing safety representatives. It is also suitable for employers, employees, safety committee members and health and safety practitioners. The aim of the course is to raise awareness of the role of a safety representative, and to provide health and safety information relevant to this role.

    This course does not replace training but provides information that may be useful as part of the training process.

    This short course for safety representatives is supported by ICTU and IBEC.

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • identify key sections of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
    • describe the role (functions) of a safety representative.
    • identify the rights of a safety representative.
    • understand the basis of risk assessment.
