iPhone 5S still being manufactured and maximum future iOS?

We don't even know what iOS will be like in the future, let alone what will run it.

Considering that Apple was still selling the 4s in India last year, I'm not surprised by this.

If I had to bet, I would say that the 5s would support at least iOS 11 and at most iOS 12.

Every S model has had one extra year of support than the previous model. The 3G ended with iOS 4, while the 3GS ended with iOS 6. The 4 ended with iOS 7, but the 4S has iOS 9. Each S model had more iOS updates, so if we assume that the iPhone 5 end at iOS 10, then the 5s will most likely receive iOS 12.

That's right, I was basing my post on exactly that.

I'm still a bit skeptical though, since that can't go on forever, otherwise every iPhone generation would support more and more iOS versions. Plus there's the iPhone "7" that's coming out this year. Since the design will be basically the same as the 6s, would it be classified as more of an "S" model than a "regular" model? If so, the A10 better be a significant jump rather than a conservative one, or the true next-gen iPhone would get both a redesign and a powerful A11 chip.

The iPhone 3GS had twice as much RAM as the iPhone 3G, and the iPhone 4s had a dual-core processor that was twice as fast with 7x the GPU performance of the iPhone 4's single-core processor. I suppose the iPhone 5s' 64-bit (compared to 32-bit) processor will give it extra time over the iPhone 5. I do think the iPhone 5s will get at least iOS 12.

I think the real question is will the battery last that long? I had an iPhone 5 that was on its last legs battery wise in 2014 when I upgraded to the 6+.

There is no fundamental reason the 5s cannot be updated as long as the 6. They are both 64bit processors with a gig of ram. At some point I could see Apple ending updates for devices with only a gig of ram, but the iPod Touch 6 and the iPhone 6/6+ are still in current manufacture.

I'm guessing that 2.5 years past the time that message was posted it doesn't matter any more.

Even now I have family members using their 5S es with new batteries. iOS 12 has made them quite fast in day to day tasks.
