A young woman has warned of the effects of cosmetic surgery after she was left with a swollen and bruised face from lip fillers.

Rachel Redpath, 21, of West Lothian, visited a beauty clinic in Glasgow's West End to get lip fillers which she hoped would boost her confidence.

However Ms Redpath was left in tears after she experienced swelling that left her housebound and unable to eat or drink.

She has shared her experience online with other girls who may be considering cosmetic procedures to enhance their looks.

Ms Redpath said she had intended to get only 0.5ml of fillers as she had never undergone prior treatment, however she was convinced to try 1ml instead for 'even fuller lips' when she arrived for surgery.

However, she was left sick to her stomach when she realised her lips had swollen to triple their regular size.

Beautox Clinic assured her that her swollen symptoms would only be temporary.

She has since posted pictures of her results after treatment at Beautox clinic in Glasgow which is run by surgeon Imran Inam.

The surgeon told her it was not unusual to experience swelling in the days after a cosmetic procedure and swelling would not have been concerning at the time of treatment.

The Beautox Clinic website says Mr Inam is an NHS surgeon with over eight years experience at hospitals across the country.

It says Mr Inam has also undertaken research into treatments for cancer of the oesophagus, funded by Cancer Research UK.

A spokesperson for Beautox said:  "Safety and health of all patients is of the utmost importance. Every client we see goes through an extensive pre-treatment consultation to discuss the procedure and what to expect during and after treatment. We also provide clear aftercare instructions."

“While the procedures are extremely safe, it is not uncommon for clients to experience swelling, redness and discomfort for around three days after an injection. In some cases, it may persist for up to two weeks.

“Every procedure at Beautox is administered by an experienced medical practitioner, supported by at least one clinical assistant. While some aesthetic treatments may be completed within ten minutes, the reality is that these treatments still involve some discomfort.

“We advise all patients to contact us immediately if they are concerned in any way or feel their symptoms are worsening and strongly recommend a follow up appointment to evaluate progress.

“We are proud of our commitment to the highest professional standards and our track record in providing excellence and quality in treatments for our many satisfied clients.”
