What to know before getting a plastic surgery ‘mommy makeover’

Mommy makeovers promise to remove excess skin and belly fat.

Moms unhappy with post-pregnancy bodies are turning to plastic surgery now more than ever, according to plastic surgery experts.

Within the past five years, the term “mommy makeover” has become synonymous with package-deal type surgeries which typically include a breast lift, breast augmentation, liposuction and tummy tuck.

Data recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows breast augmentations are up 4% and liposuction up 6% from last year. A past ASPS survey reported 62% of mothers would consider a mommy makeover if cost wasn't an issue.

Dr. Debra Johnson, president of the ASPS, said surgeries can achieve a mom's desired look, but warned there are a few factors to consider before going under the knife.

Surgery can’t replace healthy living

Plastic surgery shouldn’t come before a good exercise routine and healthy diet. First, eat clean and hit the gym to work off post-pregnancy weight. The best plastic surgery candidates are those who are physically fit and healthy, Johnson said. Also, fit patients are more likely to retain better results. Plastic surgery is meant to correct imperfections that exercise can’t. For example, surgery can get rid of loose skin, increase breast volume or repair the abdominal wall.

Be sure you’re done having children

Pregnancy after a mommy makeover can undo nearly everything (or not much at all, depending on body type).

Breast implants added by way of an areola incision or breast lifts can complicate breast feeding because of excess scar tissue. (Breast implants added by way of an incision under the boob do not interfere with breast feeding.) Tummies tightened with surgery can once again stretch out. Although, moms who’ve had abdominal surgery often carry higher.

It’s pricey

Cost varies depending on how many surgeries Mom wants as well as where the surgeries will be performed (bigger city doctors could have higher prices). Johnson said on average, a woman should set aside anywhere between $10,000 and $20,000 for a mommy makeover.

Recovery is painful

Mommy makeovers have gained popularity in part because it is more cost effective to have multiple surgeries at once. While it’s better for wallets than al la carte surgeries, mommy makeovers can pack the recovery pain. Patients will need someone helping them 24/7 for at least three days after surgery, Johnson said. Plus, they should count on having someone to care for their children for at least a week after surgery.
