Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held captive in Gaza for more than five years by Hamas, was released in Egypt earlier today, before returning to Israel. Meanwhile, the first of what are likely to be more than a thousand Palestinian prisoners to be released, in part of an elaborate and unprecedented exchange, travelled by bus from Israel to Egypt. From there, the freed prisoners will return to Gaza and the West Bank. Shalit is twenty-five years old; when he was captured, in 2006, he was nineteen.
