Hurricane Harvey: How North Texans can help

Here are details on volunteering and needs for supplies and donations.

This post will be updated throughout as new information becomes available. 

Hundreds of Harvey evacuees have come to Dallas-Fort Worth to avoid the damage and danger of the storms.

Here's how North Texans can help, with shelter, supplies and volunteer efforts:

CITY OF DALLAS: Volunteers may be needed to help evacuees at designated recreation centers. Volunteers can register online.

TRUSTED WORLD: Volunteers are needed to help sort donated items from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily  at the Trusted World central donation site at 15660 North Dallas Parkway in Dallas.  To sign up for times, click here.

Provide supplies:

Supplies are needed for Dallas locations that are housing  evacuees, including  recreation centers.

Drop off items at a donation center at 15660 North Dallas Parkway (north of Arapaho Road), Dallas, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The center is operated by the local nonprofit group Trusted World, which is working with the city and several disaster relief agencies. 

Items needed: moving boxes, diapers, baby wipes, toiletries, feminine hygiene products and nonperishable food including baby formula. The only clothing items that are needed at this time are packs of underwear and socks.

Check the Trusted World Facebook page and the city's 211 phone line for the latest information.

Other drop-off spots for Trusted World donations:

Arts Mission Oak Cliff is collecting items 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 1 and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 2 at 410 S. Windomere Ave.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2922 MLK Blvd.

West Dallas Multipurpose Center, 2828 Fish Trap Road

Any WIC location in Dallas

HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH: Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is collecting items to be delivered to shelters for evacuees. The drop-off location is at the Community Center, 13555 Hillcrest Road in Dallas, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Suggested items are diapers, baby wipes, backpacks and duffel bags, toiletries, nonperishable food and baby formula, children's toys and games, playpens, sports drinks and bottled water.

WORLD VISION: The international aid organization is gathering supplies with a goal of helping more than 100,000 people. Supplies include tents, sleeping bags, coolers, food kits, personal hygiene items, school supplies, socks, clothes, diapers, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and latex gloves.  To donate, click here.

Donate money:

DALLAS FOUNDATION:  The Dallas Foundation has started a Hurricane Harvey disaster relief fund.  Donate online here, designating funds for Harvey efforts. Checks can be mailed to the Dallas Foundation, 3963 Maple Ave., Suite 390, Dallas, Texas 75219, noting Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

UNITED WAY: United Way of Metropolitan Dallas has established a dedicated relief fund in which 100 percent of contributions will go to nonprofits supporting evacuees seeking shelter and long-term assistance in North Texas. Here's how you can donate.

RED CROSS: The American Red Cross has information about Hurricane Harvey on its website and a special appeal for help in funding the disaster response. The site includes  hurricane safety tips and resources.

Go to redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (733-2767) or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

SALVATION ARMY: The Salvation Army is accepting financial donations online or donors can  call 1-800-725-2769.  Also six local stations of CBS Radio DFW will hold a fund drive Monday to benefit the Salvation Army efforts. Money will be accepted by phone noon to 6 p.m. at 214-525-7200 and 214-525-7044 (Spanish).

HIGHER EDUCATION: Texas and national leaders in higher education have launched the Harvey HELP Fund, a crowd-sourced relief fund dedicated to aiding some 500,000 students impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Higher Education Learning Pathways will provide emergency funds to enable students in southeast Texas to stay on or quickly return to their education pathway.

Tax-deductible donations can be made through the website or directly through Communities Foundation of Texas. For more information, call 214-750-4146.

SAVE THE CHILDREN: Save the Children has set up a relief fund for kids and families affected by Harvey.

TEXAS DIAPER BANK:  Texas Diaper Bank is requesting donations of cash and diapers to provide emergency diaper kits. Visit its website and designate your donation for Disaster Relief.

SOUPMOBILE: The SoupMobile, a Dallas-based nonprofit, is sending a rescue team to the Houston area and needs financial donations. For more information, check out the organization here.

ST. MONICA CATHOLIC SCHOOL: The Dads Club of St. Monica Catholic School, 4140 Walnut Hill Lane in Dallas, is accepting donations online. The group also is assisting evacuees at the Walnut Hill shelter with meals and fellowship. To volunteer, click here.

ADVOCARE: AdvoCare, a Plano-based fitness and wellness company, has partnered with the Red Cross to match donations up to $50,000 to send relief to Southeast Texas. Here is more information on how to contribute.

ISLAMIC RELIEF: The Islamic Relief USA Disaster Response Team will have representatives assisting with evacuees at the convention center shelter. To donate to the organization's Humanitarian Aid Fund, go here.

FOOD BANKS: Area food banks affected by Hurricane Harvey  are in need of donations. Visit your local food bank's website for more information or donate to the North Texas Food Bank, which is supplying meals to centers with evacuees.

Many local businesses are offering discounts or free items in exchange for supply donations and money for Harvey relief. Find a list here or go to guidelive.com/the-feels.

Donate blood:

CARTER BLOODCARE: Carter BloodCare will send blood donations to its partners affected by Hurricane Harvey. The center will also deal with an increase in demand for blood and platelets as intensive care patients arrive in North Texas, spokeswoman Linda Goelzer said.

Donations of all blood types are needed, especially O types, she said.

North Texas donors can text DONATE4LIFE to 444-999 and a Carter BloodCare employee can tell you times and places to donate or call 1-877-571-1000.

Spiritual help:

All Catholic churches in the Diocese of Dallas will host a Holy Hour with Eucharistic Adoration at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 to offer prayer and solace to storm victims.

Dallas Bishop Edward L. Burns will preside at the Holy Hour at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of  Guadalupe at 2215 Ross Ave. All churches in the diocese will ring their bells five minutes before the Holy Hour begins.

Burns also asked that parishes pray the Rosary before Masses on Sept. 9-10.

Donated Rosary beads will be distributed before Mass and given to Catholic evacuees with the message that the prayer had been offered for them and all victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Help furry friends: 

SPCA : Hundreds of animals are being displaced because of Hurricane Harvey and are heading to North Texas.

SPCA of Texas is asking for donations of cat litter, litter boxes, towels, blankets, treats, toys and newspaper. Donations can be taken to these locations: 2400 Lone Star Drive in Dallas and 8411 Stacy Road in McKinney. Financial donations are also accepted at spca.org/give.

CEDAR HILL: The Cedar Hill AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer is at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center's mega-shelter, 650 S. Griffin St. The trailer houses supplies that create a safe, temporary home for at least 65 pets. The trailer is equipped with AKC Reunite microchips and AKC Reunite universal microchip scanners, as well as bowls, collars, leashes and other supplies.

FORT WORTH: The Fort Worth AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer is now on site at the Wilkerson-Greines shelter at 5201 Ca Roberson Blvd., Fort Worth. It operates like the Cedar Hill pet trailer and has similar supplies and services.

LONE STAR PARK: The horse racing track, 1000 Lone Star Parkway in Grand Prairie, is offering shelter free of charge for horses displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Anyone who needs shelter space can contact John Barger at 972-237-5058.

Provide shelter:

AIRBNB: Volunteer your rental home or room through rental site Airbnb.com, which is connecting evacuees in the path of the storm with free, short-term lodging. Airbnb hosts in designated areas are able to volunteer their rentals through a sign-up program. That's also where evacuees can request lodging.

The program has expanded to several cities, including Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. It will run through Sept. 25.

HOST FAMILIES: The General Consulate in Houston is looking for residents who are willing to host families from Houston for a short period of time. Potential hosts should fill out this google form.

OAK CLIFF PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH: Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church, 6000 S. Hampton Road in Dallas, has 55 beds, showers and meals available for affected families from Hurricane Harvey.  Schooling also is available if needed.
