Student loans can't just be forgiven! Education is a part of the domestic discretionary budget and that number is based on the federal budget each year. For 2021, President Trump requested $1.485 Trillion for the domestic discretionary budget of which $66.6 Billion was designated for ALL of education - kindergarten through college. Education is typically less than 2% of our national spending so is it any wonder that our education programs are failing?

Federal student loan debt is over $1.7 Trillion now and it is very clear that there is not enough money in the domestic discretionary budget to pay these loans off. The entire budget is less than the debt. So lets get real folks - the ONLY way to forgive student loan debt is to tax all Americans to cover the debt and that would be devastating to EVERY American.
Additionally, the student loan payments go directly into the GENERAL FUND to be used for anything and everything (not back into education.) Since private lenders were eliminated from the federal student loan program in 2009, the government has been making billions in high interest rates off of the federal student loan program. Coupled with the "income contingent repayment schedules" (imposed through Obama's executive order beginning in 2010) that lower payments to interest only or worse - negative amortization - nearly all of the payments made go to interest which is PROFIT to the government. So, these crippling student loan payments are profiting the government and leaving citizens financially devastated.
To authorize student loan forgiveness, CONGRESS must:
1. Pass a law authorizing student loan forgiveness and then (Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act of 1965 last occurred in 2008 and should happen every 6 years so Congress hasn't done their jobs here)
2. Find the money in the federal budget to pay for the forgiveness (Pass the Federal Budget to include $1.7 Trillion in student loan debt in addition to funding all of the rest of education (K-12) and other college funding programs.
Just because the forgiveness gets authorized doesn't mean it will be funded. This happens consistently with the Pell Grant Program where it is authorized for more than is actually funded. For example, $4,850 is authorized in an education bill but only $4,050 is funded per student per year. The "authorized" number is political and the "funded" number is real. Period.
This is a political game that burdens student loan borrowers and taxpayers.
