Karmasutra [BxG][Hybrid][18+/Commercial]

Adult thread (includes more 18+ images): viewtopic.php?f=29&t=42079

Inspired by the likes of Dark Souls, Earthbound, and various tabletop RPGs, Karmasutra is an intense, erotic hybrid RPG/Visual Novel taking place in a rich, detailed, open world.

Karmasutra takes place in the world of Tattva - a mysterious, heavenly realm that acts as the final challenge for sinners who seek the call of Nirvana in other worlds. Once home to ancient, sacred civilizations, these eras have now passed; in the wake of this passing, the realm has become an afterlife, a final challenge for restless wandering souls who commit sins in other worlds.

As our protagonist awakes in this strange land, he's quickly introduced to concept of Samsara; the journey across Tattva that all "Wanderers" must undergo to cleanse themselves of sin. Confused by this sudden pitch, our Wanderer also learns that this so-called "call of Nirvana" is not absolute; in fact, there are some Wanderers that choose to ignore the call in exchange for the infinite sexual & material pleasures - and dangers - that this mysterious afterlife seems to offer.

In this foreign realm however, Wanderers are not the only residents. From the sacred gurus who guide Wanderers and the demonic Asurian tricksters to the monstrous manifestations of sin and the Gods themselves, Tattva is never truly what it seems. But in this mysterious world, where both the path of Sin and the path Merit seem to lead to their own rewards and consequences, which path is truly correct? And more importantly, which path will you, the Wanderer, choose?

Karmasutra is a hybrid VN; it plays as an RPG, and interactions with NPCs are done in typical visual novel form. It takes place in a large world, filled with many, many unique NPCs - all with h-scnes - and various smaller events and interactions that can be pursued in parallel to the main story.

Some features include a morality system, which will change the way characters interact with you and dictate certain events across the world of Tattva,

a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired tabletop exploration system, featuring a number of interesting and unique locations,

and a turn-based combat system with a unique twist - instead of just fighting, enemies can also be conversed with, randomly generated with one of many possible personalities per-type of enemy.

And last but not least, here are a few more peaks at some of the game's characters during visual novel scenes:

Progress
The game is currently scheduled for first quarter of this year. We're considering a crowdfunding campaign, but nothing is confirmed.

Some Questions
What do you think about the premise of the game?
What's your impression of art, and do you think it works for the type of game we're aiming to make?
Because of the morality scale feature and higher interactivity of NPCs, there's a very high replay value to uncovering everything the game has to offer. What do you think of the concept of replyability integrated into the game like this?
A large inspiration for the game's story draws from religious elements of Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism. How do feel about using religious themes as major elements in forming a story?

Feedback and additional questions are certainly welcome! Thank you for reading!

1. The premise tells me two things.
- The world is rich with unique and deep lore
- This is a game worth my time

2. The art is of a medium-high quality. Easy to catch eye and pleasurable to look at. For me at least

3. Replayability, it a core factor in gaming from what i believe. Personally, i like removing replayability and forcing readers into a single flow of powerful events which i believe makes the journey short, but more memorable. But, i also know the allure of alternate outcomes is a VN's core strength.

4. A tad dangerous. Religion (in our current society) is a topic for trigger-happy kids to get angry and make noise. (see what i did with "trigger-happy"?) As such, utilizing religion is a great risk i think, but great risks bear great rewards.

All in all, your premise and art score a strong 8/10. I would definitely want to play this game when it comes out, and not for the... errr... auxiliary reason haha...

What do you think about the premise of the game?

Very different. I often enjoy stories that explore topics like this one.

What's your impression of art, and do you think it works for the type of game we're aiming to make?

The artwork is phenomenal and absolutely fits the mood you're going for here. Your colors aren't too saturated, so it looks earthy. Sorry, I can't think of a better term right now. Just know I mean it in a positive way.

Because of the morality scale feature and higher interactivity of NPCs, there's a very high replay value to uncovering everything the game has to offer. What do you think of the concept of replyability integrated into the game like this?

Personally, I don't play visual novels for the gameplay aspects. In other genres, I'm totally the completionist but I usually choose this platform because I can read the story without having to worry about it. Again that's just my perspective. Replay value is nice!

A large inspiration for the game's story draws from religious elements of Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism. How do feel about using religious themes as major elements in forming a story?

Plenty of stories (movies, tv series, novels, music, etc.) are inspired in some way by ideas that originate from other stories, mythology, history, or religious texts. It's not something that would bother me. :)

Concern #1: the scope of your title. Make sure you're prepared to invest quite a bit of time and effort into your project. Keep in mind that a lot of promising freeware VNs and games have remained unfinished because the creator experienced difficulty staying dedicated to their projects.

Even if you're selling this as a commercial title, be careful. Make sure to hire people who will contribute to game development, rather than cause delays or problems.

Concern #2: is explicit content an essential part of your project? Would the game seem incomplete without it? Or do you think you can release a Mature-rated version without compromising too much?

This is an interesting concept, and I've heard that it exists in some video games. Would the Sin versus Merit system cause the protagonist to become either 100% good or 100% evil? If the protag's morality can be somewhere in between, would there be a risk that morality will be too murky?
Unfortunately, I haven't experienced any success figuring out basic gameplay in titles which have a morality scale. I fumbled through the first stage of KOTOR and somehow managed to get to a town. However, I couldn't figure out what to do there, and set it aside. Likewise, I tried to play Dragon Age Origins, but couldn't figure out how to heal characters. It was not clear whether the protagonist was fighting enemies, or just standing there.

This is another video game concept that I've heard about, but haven't yet experienced. It seems interesting. Just as long as negotiating with foes doesn't require too much time or effort.

I like most 2D drawings, so I think it's fine. I'm not sure if your project would benefit from exaggerated or photorealistic art. As long as your drawings do not clash with the tone and themes of your project, you should be fine.

I think it's fine. Keep in mind that you can't create fiction without offending someone.
Bonesy0 wrote:Inspired by the likes of Dark Souls, Earthbound, and various tabletop RPGs...
Haven't tried Demon's Souls or any related games.

I rented EarthBound from the (now-closed) rental store New Releases Video in the Chicago suburbs, thought it was okay, and then went right back to playing Final Fantasy 6. I've tried EB a couple times since then, but I don't especially like its limited inventory.

Had some good experiences with the Star Wars pencil-and-paper RPG, as well as AD&D Second Edition. Decided to put it aside after a few too many sessions that mostly consisted of arguing over rules.

Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback so far!

Thanks for the concern! I'm a fairly experienced gamedev, so this isn't the first project that I've worked on. The team I've assembled has been at it for a few months now, and development is going very well on both the development side of things and on the business side.

To address concern #2, the game is only releasing with adult content, there will be not cut "all ages" on Steam as I feel this greatly compromises a lot of the game's content and artistic merit. Instead it's launching as an exclusive up on Nutaku.
