Police in Athens's Sytntagma Square fired tear gas at protesters, who had begun throwing stones at law enforcement.

Angry public sector employees have been rallying in the capitol for the last month, railing against a string of proposals to layoff workers, cut back pensions, and increase taxes.

Today marks the beginning of a 24-hour strike by civil servants and public utilities workers.

Greece is trying to come closer to meeting its deficit reduction and privatization goals for this year and the next in order to receive the next $11 billion tranche of EU/ECB/IMF troika aid. Its government has already announced that it will not meet these goals for the year, potentially putting this aid on the line.
