Karim Azer

Vice President, Head of Platform & Discovery Axcella

Dr. Karim Azer is the Vice President, Head of the Systems Biology Platform & Discovery at Axcella Therapeutics. He leads the data and discovery sciences organization at Axcella, bringing together innovations in data sciences and discovery sciences to advance novel pipeline opportunities through the application of systems biology, design of novel endogenous metabolic modulator combinations for new indications, and the translation of these combinations into the clinic. Prior to Axcella, Karim led quantitative sciences efforts at the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute where His work was focused on leveraging the spectrum of systems biology, including computational biology, systems pharmacology, modeling and data science, to address research and development needs of the institute, in the areas of tuberculosis, malaria, diarrheal and enteric diseases, and maternal neonatal health. Prior to that, Karim was at Merck and Sanofi, where he led and applied systems biology and pharmacology, and data science efforts towards advancing drug discovery and development programs across a wide array of therapeutics areas. Karim received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU, and holds an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Courant Institute at NYU, and B.S. degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from Rutgers University. He has worked in the pharmaceutical industry since 1997, employing a wide variety of systems biology approaches to address drug discovery and development initiatives in R&D.

Jing Li, Ph.D – Jing joined<a href="https://www.ptcbio.com/"> PTC Therapeutics</a> in January 2020 as Executive Director, Biology, with the goal of advancing novel small molecules, including RNA splicing modulators, for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancer. Prior to joining PTC, he was the Chief Scientific Officer at Eternity Bioscience, Inc. Prior to that he worked at Merck Research Laboratories for fifteen years with various roles and increased responsibilities, including Director of Biology Discovery, Director of Pharmacology. Jing received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Medical College of Pennsylvania, B.S. degree in Biochemistry from University of Nevada and M.B. in Medicine from Shanghai Medical University. Jing discovered novel tumor suppressor gene, PTEN, while he was post-doctoral fellow at Columbia University. Jing co-authored over fifty scientific and patent publications, including in the journals of Science, Nature Genetics.

Vice President Head of Preclinical Biology, Inflammation & Immunology Research Unit Pfizer

Dr Cara Williams earned her PhD (Immunopharmacology), from Liverpool University, England UK. During her PhD studies she completed an internship at Boots/BASF/Knoll laboratories in Nottingham England where she found her passion for drug discovery and drug development. Following her PhD she completed a short postdoc at Liverpool University in the Department of Bioengineering before moving to the USA to embrace her love of mast cells; that annoying culprit involved in such things as anaphylaxis, allergy, asthma, worm and tick expulsion, itch, and the list continues to grow! She completed her postdoctoral studies on mast cell biology at Harvard University- Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She then moved to Stanford University, Palo Alto CA to continue her research into mast cell function in health and disease. Nevertheless, as a devoted drug discovery pharmacologist with an interest in turning basic research into new therapeutic breakthroughs for patients, Cara moved into the preclinical drug discovery world of biotech/pharma joining Genetics Institute/AHP, Wyeth, Pfizer and later to Boehringer Ingelheim in Germany. She returned to Pfizer USA in 2019 and now leads the Preclinical Biology research line within the Inflammation & Immunology Research Unit at the Cambridge MA site within Pfizer PRDM.
