Episode 48: The Puppetoons- Interview with Arnie Leibovit

Listen to an in-depth interview with director and producer Arnold Leibovit about his fantastic restorations of The Puppetoons!

'The Puppetoons' series of short films were a very important part of Ray Harryhausen's early career, being his first paid work as an animator in the 1940s. Created by legendary director George Pal, the films used replacement animation, whereby a series of individual models were created to portray different movements or facial expressions, frame by frame. Trustee John Walsh and Collections Manager Connor Heaney speak with Arnie about his friendships with George Pal and Ray Harryhausen, and his decades of work with The Puppetoon films.

Wonderful news for fans of Ray Harryhausen and stop-motion animation, as 'The Puppetoon Movie Volume 3' is now available to purchase. The release showcases high quality, restored versions of these wonderful films, many of which not been available to view in decades. Amongst other short films on this new release, Volume 3 contains 'Western Daze'- the first Puppetoon film that Ray Harryhausen worked upon.

A must for fans of Ray Harryhausen and classic cinema!

From a young age, I have been enthralled by the work of Ray Harryhausen. From 'Mighty Joe Young' to 'Clash of the Titans', this titan of cinema has provided me with countless hours of imagination and adventure. When I saw that there was now a monthly Ray Harryhausen podcast, I had to find out more!

This is a truly unique and entertaining podcast, covering the life, career and films of an undisputed legend of cinema. Hosted by the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation, this monthly show is packed with fascinating anecdotes, interviews and analysis of Ray's classic films and legacy.

The show's hosts, Connor and John, have provided a variety of intreguing episodes to date, covering all aspects of Ray's career, from film anniversaries to unique interviews. The sound quality is fantastic; far better than most podcasts I've listened to- and the episodes are topped and tailed with music from the films covered in the episode. Most enjoyable to date have been the 35th anniversary celebration podcast for my favourite film, 'Clash of the Titans', as well as a lovely interview with Ray's daughter Vanessa. To top things off, the shows usually contain unique interview clips with Ray Harryhausen himself- to my knowledge, these commentary snippets have never been heard before, and so make this show vital listening to all fans of Ray Harryhausen.

I can't wait to hear what these guys have up their sleeves for the coming months and years. A must listen for all fans of Ray Harryhausen, or classic cinema in general!
