Inside-Out Tamale Plate

Who doesn’t love tamales? At Diane Powers’ Casa Sol y Mar, diners can now try a delicious twist on this Mexican food classic: the Inside-Out Tamale.

Casa Sol y Mar’s Inside-Out Tamales begin with handmade, fresh masa with cheese. The masa is butterflied open and topped to order with a choice of chile Colorado, chile verde, shredded beef or chicken, or sautéed vegetables, and topped with their own special sauce and melted cheese. Each tamale is served with Mexican rice and beans.

“I wanted our customers to enjoy piping hot tamales made to order,” said Julie Bell-Gastelum, general manager for Casa Sol y Mar, who came up with the idea. “While most tamales are premade and stored before serving, our Inside-Out Tamales give customers the opportunity to enjoy one of our most popular items fresh to their table and paired with rich, authentic Mexican flavors.”

The Inside-Out Tamale is currently served as part of Casa Sol y Mar’s new lunch specials menu, and is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $10.95. The dish will also soon be added to the restaurant’s seasonal menu and will be served all day.

Additional lunch specials include a lunch-sized portion of the restaurant’s famed Tequila Lime Shrimp; Torta de Barbacoa, grilled carnitas with a chipotle-tequila barbecue sauce, pickled red onion, chipotle mayo and melted cheese on a bolillo roll, served with fiesta coleslaw and French fries; and the Piñata Salad with grilled chicken breast, fresh salad greens, chopped tomato, red bell pepper, avocado, black beans, roasted fresh corn, mixed cheese and jicama tossed in a lime vinaigrette and served with fresh watermelon wedges.

Casa Sol y Mar is located in the bustling Del Mar Highlands Town Center at 12865 El Camino Real. It is the fourth in Powers’ Bazaar del Mundo Restaurant Group, also including Casa Guadalajara in Old Town, Casa de Pico in La Mesa and Casa de Bandini in Carlsbad.
