Olympic Champion Thomas Röhler says throwing the Javelin 100 meters is not impossible and Great Britain’s long jumper Jazmin Sawyers says period pains shouldn’t be news ahead of the European TEAM Championships in Lille, France this weekend.
Germany, hoping to regain the TEAM Championship title won at home in Braunschweig in 2014, will expect Olympic javelin Champion Thomas Rohler to deliver. Röhler who has already thrown 93.90m in Doha this season is also in confident mood he says the 100 meter mark is not impossible its just a case of being faster and technically better.
Jazmin Sawyers of Great Britain, last summer’s European long jump silver medallist, hit the newspaper headlines recently after admitting that she was forced to pull out of a competition in the US city of Boston due to period pains. The 23-year old Team GB athlete urged more sportswomen to shatter the taboo about how the menstrual cycle can affect performance.
Going into this weekend’s European Team Championships Sawyers said it was “hilarious” the amount of news coverage he generated from her comments considering that it's a subject that affects all young women.
The European Athletics TEAM Championships takes place between 23rd and 25th June at the Lille Metropole stadium.

QUESTION: 100 meters is not impossible?
00:25 - 00:58 SOUNDBITE Thomas Röhler, Olympic Champion, Javelin. (English Language)
“It’s not impossible its just that people think that it is the limit and we are trying to think limitless to try and get ourselves into the position that we can do even better and better. We all know that 93.90 is really, really far but we want to throw really, really, really far. There is a world record to be broken one day and it’s close to 100 meters and like I said its just physics if you can be a little faster and a little more technically better then you are good to throw even further.

“One I think its great that people took it so positively and did share it and talk about it but isn’t it hilarious that a woman having a period makes the news. You know it happens to all of us but the fact that everybody was so open talking about it can hopefully not become a big deal. If I felt comfortable talking about that when I was much younger maybe I would have been able to sort the problem way, way before because its something I’ve been dealing with my whole life so hopefully now there is a young athlete that saw the articles and thought I can talk to my coach about this and I can talk to my doctor about this because it was something they didn’t want to speak about before.

“I think I’m in good shape we have had a good winter the season started off slow. I haven’t had any great performances outdoor yet but indoors I jumped a PB so I know I am in the right shape so I’m just waiting for everything to click hopefully that is going to be this weekend.”
